IPL 2023 Auction: BCCI Rope In Hugh Edmeades As Auctioneer For IPL 2023 Mini-auction

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has roped in the 62-year-old Hugh Edmeades as auctioneer for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 auction.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 player auction, which will be a mini-auction, is set to be held on December 23 in Kochi.

IPL 2022 Auction Held Up After Auctioneer Hugh Edmeades Collapses On Stage

During the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 mega auction Hugh Edmeades, who took over from Richard Madley in 2018 and has been conducting the IPL auction ever since, collapsed midway through the auction due to postural hypotension.

Edmeades was instantly provided with medical help and he was found unfit to continue on day 1 of the two-day Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 mega auction at the Hotel ITC Gardenia in Bengaluru.

Sports presenter Charu Sharma was handed the auctioneer duties in the absence of Hugh Edmeades. However, Edmeades returned to conduct the final leg of the auction amid loud cheers and a standing ovation from the franchises and the BCCI officials.

Speaking to Sportstar on Wednesday, November 30, the renowned auctioneer Hugh Edmeades, who has conducted over 2500 auctions, said that he is thrilled to once again oversee the IPL auction. He said:

“I am thrilled to have been asked by the BCCI to conduct the 2023 IPL auction and am excited about visiting Kochi for the first time.”

Meanwhile, the window for the franchises to retain and release players ended on November 15 and 163 players were retained by the franchises whereas 85 players were released.

Also, in addition to the money left over from the Indian Premier League 2022 mega auction and the value of the players released, each team will have an additional INR 5 crore to spend at the Indian Premier League 2023 auction. This will lead to the teams having a total purse of INR 95 crore.
