Ben Stokes, an all-rounder and Test skipper for England, decided to participate in the IPL 2023 auction after sitting out the 2022 season.

However, England’s white-ball coach Matthew Mott is hopeful that Stokes will decide to play in ODIs after his heroics in the T20 World Cup final.

Due to England’s busy schedule, Stokes, who last appeared in the IPL in 2021, did not put his name in the mega auction earlier this year. Stokes, who took over as England’s Test skipper before the home season, stated that he would instead focus all of his efforts on helping his team succeed in the longest format, which is why he decided to forego playing in the IPL in 2022. Stokes, playing for Rajasthan Royals, suffered a finger injury in the opening game of the 2021 season and was forced to withdraw from the remainder of the competition.

Stokes is preparing for another IPL season despite having retired from ODIs and playing the game-winning innings against Pakistan in the T20 World Cup final. Even though they were chasing a modest target, England needed someone to steady the ship, and Stokes delivered. England was three wickets down in the powerplay. Stokes mentioned his first T20I fifty during this process, and what a perfect time to do so.

“Ben Stokes has a lot to offer to England’s white-ball team”: Matthew Mott

Given his performance in the T20 World Cup final, England’s white-ball coach, Matthew Mott, is still hopeful that Stokes will return to the ODI lineup.
As a three-dimensional player, Mott claimed that he has a lot to offer England’s white-ball squad. According to Mott, he has left the door open for Stokes and has given him the choice to forgo playing 50-over cricket for a while.

“When he spoke to me about his ODI retirement one of the first things I said was that I’d back any decision he made, but I said to him he didn’t necessarily have to retire, he could just not play 50-overs for a while. And I said: ‘You could always unretire’,” Mott was quoted as saying by The Guardian.

“That’s his decision. It’s going to be a World Cup year and we don’t play much T20 cricket for a while, but it will be up to him. The more we can get him is great. He’s doing an amazing job with the Test captaincy but he is a very big cog in the wheel when he comes back to white-ball,” he added.
Ben Stokes didn’t play the 2022 edition but is tempted to give the cash-rich league another go.
