On Friday, December 2, the Indian Premier League (IPL) officially confirmed that the ‘Impact Player’ rule will be introduced in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023.

The concept of the ‘Impact Player’ was introduced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2022 and it received a lot of positive feedback. Also, the concept used in the Indian Premier League (IPL) could be very similar to the concept trialed during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

On Friday, December 2, a post was shared on IPL’s official Twitter handle in which it was stated that a “tactical concept ” is all set to be introduced in the marquee tournament which will add a “new dimension” to the game and a substitute player will be able to play a major role during the IPL matches.

“From the TATA IPL 2023 season a tactical concept will be introduced to add a new dimension to the IPL, wherein one substitute player per team will be able to take a more active part in an IPL match,” IPL stated.

The ‘Impact Player’ rule allows teams to bring in a substitute player in place of any member of the starting XI. Teams taking part in a match will be required to submit the names of four substitutes at the time of toss and teams can only make a change in their playing XI by bringing in a substitute from the list of four players.

Also, the ‘Impact Player’ can only replace any member of the starting XI before the end of the 14th over of either innings and the player who has been replaced will no longer be allowed to participate in the match. The ‘Impact Player’ rule is not applicable when the game is reduced to less than 10 overs per side.

Meanwhile, the 22-year-old Delhi off-spinner Hrithik Shokeen became the first tactical substitute, known as ‘Impact Player’, in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He replaced opening batsman Hiten Dalal in the playing XI on Tuesday, October 11, during the match between Delhi and Manipur at the Jaipuria Vidyalaya Ground.
