IPL 2023 Auction: Kane Williamson Has Had A Disastrous Campaign - Tom Moody On Williamson's Retention Possibilities By SRH

Sun Risers Hyderabad (SRH) had a topsy-turvy 2022 edition where they showed a lot of promise in the first half but later succumbed to pressure. Kane Williamson had a forgettable tournament with the bat where he managed to score only 216 runs where he scored only one half-century in 13 matches.

SRH now would be thinking about whether to retain Williamson or not for the 2023 edition as his base price is 14 Crore. There’s no doubt that Williamson is one of the greatest captains but his lack of runs at the top of the order is concerning.

Tom Moody on Kane Williamson

Former SRH Head Coach Tom Moody was having an interaction with Star Sports and was asked about Kane Williamson.

“It’s an interesting one for SunRisers, because when you commit at the beginning of a big auction to retain a player of the caliber of Kane Williamson at 14 crores, you would think that they are thinking about the long term. They’re thinking about the bigger picture. But clearly, he’s had a disastrous campaign in the last four months in T20 cricket, certainly not up to his standards,” said Tom Moody.

“We know his quality as a leader. He’s a highly respected leader in the IPL and globally. So, it just depends on how much weight they put on that leadership. So, whether they release him or not. To me, 14 crores is a lot of money for any player,” he added.

Conundrum for SRH

The SRH management would be well aware that finding a new skipper on the 11th hour won’t be easy. Their decision to part ways with David Warner was a bit controversial as he had a terrific season with Delhi Capitals (DC) where he scored 432 runs in 12 matches where he scored 5 half-centuries.

Kane Williamson didn’t have a good ICC T20 World Cup 2022 where he was seen struggling. His defensive approach at the start of innings is doing no good to the team. There is also a chance that SRH may part ways with Kane Williamson and later buy him in the auction at a less price.
