2016 IPL Champions SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) have taken a bold step by releasing Kane Williamson and Nicholas Pooran from their setup. The Men in Orange were looking a dominant force in the first half of the tournament but later a string of losses ended their tournament.
Before the IPL Retention 2023, SRH had parted ways with Tom Moody and named Brian Lara as the new Head Coach of the team. It looks like SRH wants to start afresh as it has been 6 years since the team won the IPL.
Huge Blow for Kane Williamson
Kane Williamson was the most expensive player whose price was 14 crore. He was with them for 8 years and in that phase, he scored 2,101 runs and played 76 matches where he was the captain in 46 of them. The reason behind his axe could be his outdated batting as in IPL 2022 he hardly made an impact as he scored 216 runs in 13 matches where he scored one half-century.
Kane Williamson perhaps has to change his batting style as due to his slow batting, there is pressure on other batters. SRH fans would be hoping that SRH doesn’t make a similar mistake that they made with David Warner.
Nicholas Pooran Released
West Indies Skipper Nicholas Pooran had scored 306 runs in 14 matches for SRH where he scored 2 half-centuries and was looking quite threatening. His omission from the main squad is a little bit surprising as he could have been an ideal candidate for the captaincy. Pooran’s axe could be because of his T20 World Cup form where he scored only 25 runs in 3 matches of the Qualifithers and was seen struggling.
Pooran’s price was 10.75 Crores which was massive and now SRH has 24.75 Crores from Williamson and Pooran and a total of 42.25 Crores. They have 4 overseas slots available where we cannot rule out the possibility that both can be bought again for a low price. It won’t be wrong to say that T20 Cricket has moved to impact players who can smash a cameo rather than a batter anchoring the innings.
