IPL Auction 2023- Ben Stokes Bought By CSK For INR 16.25 Crores

Chennai Super Kings picked Ben Stokes during IPL 2023 auction. The four-time IPL champion CSK bought the England all-rounder for Rs. 16.25 crores during IPL 2023 auction. Ben Stokes had a base price of Rs. 2 crores in the auction. Now, he is ready to play under the guidance of CSK skipper MS Dhoni in IPL 2023.

So far, Ben Stokes has played 43 matches in the Indian Premier League. The left-handed batter has scored 920 runs at an average of 25.56 and a strike rate of 134+. He has also hit 2 centuries and 2 fifties in the tournament. With the ball, the right-arm pacer has scalped 28 wickets at an economy of 8.56. Here we talk about 3 reasons why Ben Stokes will be a flop in IPL 2023.

IPL Auction 2023: 3 Reasons Why Ben Stokes Will Be A Flop In IPL 2023

3. High Economy Rate While Bowling

While Stokes has a good economy rate of 8.56 in 43 IPL games so far, he has been quite expensive if we consider the last three IPL seasons. In IPL 2021, he held an economy rate of 12.0 in the only game he played.

In IPL 2020, the right-arm pacer conceded runs at an economy rate of 10.26. In IPL 2019, the England pacer had an economy rate of 11.22 across 9 games. Hence, if Stokes bowls at a similar bowling economy for CSK during IPL 2023, he might emerge as an expensive bowler and a liability for the team.

2. Wrong Batting Slot

Ben Stokes bats in the middle order for England. However, if we take a look at the Chennai Super Kings squad, they have many middle-order batsmen like MS Dhoni, Ambati Rayudu, Ravindra Jadeja, Moeen Ali, and Shivam Dube. All these batters play in the middle order.

Hence, CSK might find it hard to find an appropriate batting slot for Ben Stokes. Moreover, since CSK is short of powerful opening batsmen, they might ask Stokes to open the innings for the team. Hence, a wrong batting slot might prevent Stokes from coming up with a good show in IPL 2023.

1. Poor Batting Strike Rate In 2022

If we take a look at Ben Stokes’ batting strike rate in 2022 in T20Is, it was feeble. The left-handed batsman owned a strike rate of just 106.71 in 2022 across 9 T20I games for England. In a tournament like IPL, strike rate matters a lot for batsmen as teams need to score maximum runs on the board.

Hence, Stokes has struggled with his batting strike rate in the shortest format this year and if this continues next year during IPL 2023 as well, he will be looked up as a weak batsman.
