Indian Test specialist batsmen Cheteshwar Pujara and Hanuma Vihari are reportedly not participating in the next Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 mini-auction. The duo has decided to skip the auction as they have not been able to get a game in the IPL for many years.

The IPL 2023 mini-auction will be held on December 23 in Kochi. The organizers recently revealed that a total of 991 players, including 714 Indians and 277 overseas players, have registered for the mini-auction. Ben Stokes, Cameron Green, and Sam Curran are some of the high-profile names on the list.

Both Sensibly Decided To Give This Auction A Miss

Pujara was a member of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) team that won the IPL in 2021, but his last IPL appearance was in 2014. Vihari last played in the IPL for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the 2019 season.

“Since this is a mini-auction, both Pujara and Vihari knew that teams will have a limited budget. So, both sensibly decided to give this auction a miss,” said source tracking development.

“This list will be pruned to half-say about 450-odd players, by December 9-the deadline for preparing the shortlist. Expect around 200 players to go under the hammer, eventually,” said the source.

Cheteshwar Pujara was bought by CSK in the 2021 auction for his base price of Rs 50 lakh. Pujara has previously played in the IPL for the teams KKR, RCB, and PBKS. With 30 games under his belt, he has scored 390 runs, including a half-century.

Pujara ended up playing for Sussex in the County Championship in 2022. After being dropped from the Test squad for the home series against Sri Lanka, the right-handed batter’s stint in England proved to be a turning point. He was able to regain his place in the team for the test matches.

Hanuma Vihari has represented both the Sunrisers Hyderabad and the Delhi Capitals. He has played in 24 IPL games and scored 284 runs. Vihari played in his final IPL match in the year 2019. He received no bids from any teams in the 2022 auction.
