Renowned auctioneer Hugh Edmeades, who has successfully conducted nearly 2,700 auctions worldwide, returns to centerstage as the auctioneer for the much-anticipated mini-auction ahead of next year’s 16th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in Kochi, starting at 02:30 pm (IST) on Friday, December 23.

Hugh Edmeades returns for his fifth IPL auction. The 62-year-old collapsed on the floor during the IPL 2022 mega auction earlier this year. The incident took place when Edmeades was auctioning Sri Lankan bowler Wanindu Hasaranga on Day 1. The veteran commentator and presenter Charu Sharma took the proceedings further and completed the selling of the remaining players.

I Just Ran Out Of Gas – Hugh Edmeades

Edmeades was unable to complete the bidding process, and the cause of his collapse was later revealed to be a case of postural hypotension. The IPL released an interview with Edmeades on social media ahead of the auction, in which the auctioneer stated that he was not physically ready for the auction.

“My fall came totally out of the blue in Bengaluru. In 2,700 auctions I have never fallen off the stage in my life. I am fine now, no recurrence. I think I was just physically unprepared. Not enough sleep, not enough food. I think I just ran out of gas,” he said.

“I felt it coming on and I thought I would have a break after I have sold Hasaranga but the next thing I knew I was being picked off the floor. That was unexpected. Touching wood, I am very fit, thank you,” he added.

405 cricketers will go under the hammer to fill 87 slots. Ben Stokes, Sam Curran, Harry Brook, Cameron Green, and Kane Williamson can fetch big prices in the auction. According to reports, the BCCI has for the first time allowed live video conferencing between team management staff at the auction table.
