A day after his teammate Mitchell Starc – the most expensive IPL player ever joined the KKR camp, Pat Cummins who captains Starc in Australia, has joined the Sunrisers Hyderabad camp ahead of IPL 2024. Cummins had walked away from the player auctions last year in Dubai with a 20.5 crore deal with the 2016 IPL champions, becoming the 2nd most expensive after his countryman.

With just 4 days left for Sunrisers Hyderabad’s IPL 2024 opener against the Kolkata Knight Riders away at the Eden Gardens, Pat Cummins has joined the SRH camp. He will be taking over the captaincy role from South Africa’s Aiden Markram under whose captaincy, the South Indian outfit finished bottom of the table with just 4 wins to their name. Other than Cummins, Cricket World Cup 2023 final’s man of the match Travis Head, too has joined SRH.

The Sunrisers Hyderabad took to their official social media handles to announce the arrival of their brand-new captain Pat Cummins. It will be the right-arm pacer’s 4th IPL franchise following his stints with 5-time champions Mumbai Indians, 2-time winners Kolkata Knight Riders, and the Delhi Capitals.

This will be the first time that he will captain an IPL outfit, which is, in fact, in dire need of a leader who can turn around their fortune. The Sunrisers haven’t qualified for the play-offs in the past 4 seasons with their previous top 4 finish coming during the 2020 season when they finished 3rd with 14 points to their name.

However, Hyderabad eventually crashed out of the tournament with a defeat against Delhi Capitals in qualifier 2 and since then they have remained in the bottom half. In 2021 and 2022, SRH remained 8th, while last year their performance worsened and they finished 10th.

But this year with a new leadership in place with Pat Cummins, the 2023 World Cup-winning captain, in charge, the one-time winners will be aiming to land their 2nd title. They also have acquired the services of Australia’s assistant coach during the CWC 2023, Daniel Vettori, someone who worked closely with Cummins less than 6 months ago.

In a 13-second video clip shared by the Sunrisers, Pat Cummins stated that he is very eager to begin the season with his new team and that he is very excited to get along with his new teammates for the next few months. He will have plenty of pressure over his head and it remains to be seen how the team performs under him.

“I’m ready, I’m pumped. Yeah, let’s go and do it. I’m excited. Great to be here. Can’t wait to get the season started. I know a few of the boys but few of the guys I haven’t met yet. Can’t wait to get stuck in.” – Cummins said.
