The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has provided a massive update on Rishabh Pant, Prasidh Krishna, and Mohammed Shami’s participation in the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), scheduled to commence on Friday, March 22.
Rishabh Pant endured a severe car accident near Roorkee on December 30th, 2022. The left-handed batter underwent surgeries for the injuries sustained during the incident. The southpaw took 14 months for the rehab and recovery process before making his comeback.
The 26-year-old cricketer’s last appearance for India was in December 2022, during the Bangladesh tour. However, following a severe car accident, he was sidelined from several major tournaments, including the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, IPL 2023, ICC World Test Championship Final, Asia Cup 2023, and the 2023 ODI World Cup.
Rishabh Pant Has Now Been Declared Fit – BCCI
The Indian cricket board confirmed that Rishabh Pant has been cleared to represent the Delhi Capitals (DC) in the IPL 2024. The statement mentioned that the DC skipper is fit to play as a wicketkeeper-batsman despite returning to action after a prolonged absence.
“After undergoing an extensive 14-month rehab and recovery process, following a life-threatening road mishap on December 30th, 2022, near Roorkee, Uttarakhand, Rishabh Pant has now been declared fit as a wicket-keeper batter for the upcoming TATA IPL 2024,” the BCCI’s statement read.
Last month, Capitals co-owner Parth Jindal revealed that Rishabh Pant will lead DC, but he will play as a batter in the first half. Jindal noted that further decisions regarding Pant’s role would depend on his physical condition and how he responds during the event.
The 26-year-old will take over the captaincy from David Warner, who led the team in the previous season, for the Delhi-based franchise in the IPL 2024. They secured five victories out of 14 league-stage matches, finishing second from the bottom in the last edition.
The Delhi Capitals will take on the Punjab Kings during their first match at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, Chandigarh, on March 23.
Mohammed Shami Is Ruled Out Of The Upcoming TATA IPL 2024 – BCCI
Mohammed Shami underwent successful surgery on February 26 to address his right heel issue. The veteran pace bowler remains under observation by the BCCI medical team and will not participate in the upcoming TATA IPL 2024.
“Mohammed Shami successfully underwent surgery on February 26th, 2024, for his right heel problem. He is currently being monitored by the BCCI medical team and is ruled out of the upcoming TATA IPL 2024.”
Mohammed Shami has been sidelined from cricket since the 2023 World Cup final defeat against Australia in Ahmedabad. The senior pacer was expected to return to action during home Tests against England. However, he was forced to undergo surgery for his injury.
During the IPL 2023 season, Mohammed Shami emerged as the leading wicket-taker for the Gujarat Titans (GT) franchise, securing 28 wickets in 17 matches. Despite his impressive performance, the team ended up as the runners-up in the tournament.
