Five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI) kick off their IPL 2024 campaign against Gujarat Titans on March 24. They play four games in total in the first leg with matches against SRH (March 27) Rajasthan Royals (April 1) and Delhi Capitals (April 7).

Hardik Pandya rejoined Mumbai Indians in a massive move by the management ahead of IPL 2024. The trade was the biggest break news before the auction. What was interesting was he was also named the captain of the side replacing Rohit Sharma.

Hardik has been injury probe for the major part of his career. His most recent injury was an ankle injury that he picked up in the World Cup game against Bangladesh and since then has missed every international assignment that India has played.

Recently former Indian pacer Praveen Kumar has blasted Hardik for not playing red-ball cricket and also skipping international cricket to play only in IPL matches. The move by MI to name Hardik as the captain despite his recent injury status took the former Indian cricketers by surprise.

What was surprising was he was given an A category in BCCI’s newly announced central contract list despite him missing international games for a long time. Mumbai roped in eight players in the IPL 2024 auction.

Gerald Coetzee (Rs. 5 crores), Dilshan Madushanka (Rs. 4.60 crores), Shreyas Gopal (Rs. 20 lakhs), Nuwan Thushara (Rs. 4.80 crores), Naman Dhir (Rs. 20 lakh), Anshul Kamboj (Rs. 20 lakhs), Mohammad Nabi (Rs. 1.5 crore), Shivalik Sharma (Rs. 20 lakhs) are the players that Mumbai went for strengthening their bowling in the process. Ishan Kishan will open the batting with Rohit. He and Shreyas Iyer were excluded from BCCi’s central contract list. Kishan has been away from international since the Test series against South Africa. Tim David will slot in at six as the specialist hard-hitter. He is being seen as a like-for-like replacement for Kieron Pollard. David scored 321 runs at a strike rate of 158.22 last season. He is yet to score a fifty for Mumbai Indians.

MI paid 4.60 crores to rope in the Sri Lankan pacer. He dismissed Rohit Sharma in the World Cup against India and made a name for himself. The pacer with his pace and swing will be a perfect foil for Jasprit Bumrah.
