It was a literal occasion for everyone at the ACA-VDCA stadium during Delhi Capitals’ 21-run win against Chennai Super Kings in match no. 13 of IPL 2024 last night. Our beloved former India captain MS Dhoni walked out to bat for the first time in the ongoing season after a wait of 307 days and for the first time since the IPL 2023 final. Upon his return, MSD claimed several records to his name with his blistering 37 off 16.

The strike rate and intent in which MS Dhoni was batting against Delhi Capitals, who were searching for their first victory, was daunting, impactful, and highly positive. His bat swing seemed as fresh as it used to be back in the day and even though times have changed, Mahi has remained the same. Having walked out to bat very late at the number 8 spot, Dhoni had a 200+ strike rate.

Even if CSK were not able to win the match en route DC bowlers’ superb game plan to consistently bowl fuller outside off-stump deliveries, it was good to see MS Dhoni playing counterattacking shots. He knew and was also captured telling Ravindra Jadeja that the opposing bowlers won’t strive off their plan. And despite all that, Dhoni was able to strike 4 fours and 3 sixes.

Which records did MS Dhoni earn in the match against DC?

The highlight shot for MS Dhoni in the match was when he struck a one-handed six off Anrich Nortje in the final over of the match. With that, the 42-year-old earned himself several records. The first record is that he is now the first wicket-keeper batsman from Asia to have completed 7000 runs in the shortest format of the game – at the international as well as franchise level.

Up next, MS Dhoni with his 37*, became the batter with the most 20 or 20+ scores in a match by an Indian in the T20 format. He also further increased his stretch in the list of most runs scored by a wicket-keeper batsman while playing in the richest T20 league of the world. MSD is now the first WK to have scored 5000 runs in the league.

Last but not least, MS Dhoni with his 3 maximums last night, became the first batsman in IPL history to have smacked 100 in the final two overs of the match – 19th and 20th. So, all of this tells us that he had a fantastic return to the cricketing field and that knock certainly provided him a lot of confidence, as CSK proceeded in the competition.

CSK to visit Hyderabad next

Meanwhile, following their 21-run loss to DC at Vishakhapatnam, CSK will travel a few miles from the location to face the Sunrisers Hyderabad in their next league match. Expect the Yellow army to turn up once again as MS Dhoni will be going to the Rajiv Gandhi stadium for the first time in over a year on Friday, 5th of April.

In their head-to-head stats, CSK have claimed victories in 15 out of the 28 matches against SRH who have won the tie 13 times.
