Former Indian seamer Praveen Kumar feels that India captain Rohit Sharma was absolutely right when he was heard scolding his players during the recent 5-match home Test series against England. Under Rohit’s captaincy, the Indians claimed their 17th straight red-ball series win on home soil with a 4-1 win over Ben Stokes’ side.

Rohit Sharma’s men had to produce a terrific turnaround after they lost the 1st Test match by 28 runs at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium in Hyderabad. After that shocking loss, the hosts produced one of the best turnarounds, winning all 4 of the next Tests in Vizag, Rajkot, Ranchi, and Dharamshala – all in a comprehensive manner.

Why was Rohit Sharma intrigued to abuse his players?

That series win took India to the top of the ICC World Test Championship points table. While there were many incidents that happened during the series, one that was discussed and went viral the most was Rohit Sharma scolding and abusing his players during the 2nd Test in Vizag which India claimed by 106 runs.

During session 2 of the 2nd innings when middle-order batters Jonny Bairstow and Ben Stokes were batting, Rohit Sharma was apparently unhappy with a certain player’s body language while fielding. The game was on its head at that time and Rohit wanted all of his players to be very attentive.

And that’s when the 36-year-old got angry and said, “Koi bhi garden mein ghumega, maa c*** dunga sabki”. All he tried to say was that no one should be acting as if they were roaming in the garden, or else he would take necessary actions.

To that, Praveen Kumar, who recently appeared in a podcast with Journalist Shubhankar Mishra, while discussing the longevity of Rohit Sharma, said the Indian captain was “spot on” when warning his players. On Rohit’s longevity, Kumar stated that while some players finish their careers at 30, Rohit’s began at that age and that’s because he has that self-belief in him.

“The careers of some players end at 30, and for others like Rohit, it begins. Rohit has that self-confidence, self-belief. And the way he is captaining; we heard him say ‘jo koi bhi garden mein ghoomega…’ he is absolutely right. Some players are not giving importance to playing for the country. So yeah, he is spot on in scolding them,” Praveen Kumar told Shubhankar Mishra.

Praveen Kumar says Rohit Sharma is aging like fine wine

Praveen Kumar then went on to say that Rohit Sharma is absolutely unfazed by his aging self and the way he has been batting at this point of time, speaks volumes about the confidence he has at the moment.

“He has so much confidence right now, the way Rohit is batting – especially in the World Cup – he has shown what he is capable of. He may or may not score a hundred but he wanted to score 80 off 40 balls.”

“It’s rare and amazing at the same time for Indian cricket that a player after 30 is doing all these incredible things. It will change that thinking that players need to be sidelined once they are 32-33,” Praveen Kumar concluded.
