Former 2-time IPL winning captain with Kolkata Knight Riders Gautam Gambhir, who is mentoring the franchise in IPL 2024, praised West Indies' Sunil Narine for the knock he played last night against Rajasthan Royals.

Narine, who was originally a mystery off-spinner, was transformed into an opening batsman after his power-hitting ability was brought to the fore and since then he has been opening for KKR. This season, he has been in red-hot form and his performance last night was a prime example of it.

Having arrived to open alongside Phil Salt, Sunil Narine started attacking the RR bowlers from the word go, just as he has done this season until now.

But his innings were much more special yesterday in front of home fans at the Eden Gardens stadium, which did see its home team lose eventually, but they could not be more thankful for the franchise to have someone like Narine.

The West Indian displayed his power-hitting prowess at full swing and was largely responsible for KKR setting up the target of 224.

What Gautam Gambhir say about Sunil Narine?

After Phil Salt's dismissal in the 3rd ball of the 4th over when KKR were at 21, Sunil Narine was joined by their talented number 3 young batter Angkrish Raghuvanshi.

Narine and Raghuvanshi were not fazed by the wicket as they kept attacking the RR bowlers recklessly and put together a partnership of 85 runs before the Indian uncapped batter went back after scoring 30 off 18 deliveries.

Then Shreyas Iyer and Andre Russell came and left for 11 and 13 respectively in the space of 4 overs (12-16) but Narine was still there.

Sunil Narine displayed his range-hitting ability very well as he went on to cause furthermore damage in the death overs, scored his maiden full century, and left the crease when KKR were at 195 runs.

His knock intrigued Gautam Gambhir to take to X (formerly Twitter) earlier today and praise Narine for his stupendous knock. "There was, there is, there will be…only one!" This is what Gambhir had to say about the West Indies international.

Even though KKR were not able to get the victory in the end, the knock from Sunil Narine was one to remember and to be talked about for a very long time.

After the 1st innings came to an end and when Narine was asked to speak to the commentators, the left-hand batter revealed that it was the KKR mentor, who gave him the confidence again to go on and open the innings for Knight Riders. "Gautam Gambhir gave me the confidence and the assurance to do well. He backed me as an opener."

Gautam Gambhir's Tweet receives mixed reactions

Meanwhile, the tweet made by Gautam Gambhir has been receiving a lot of mixed reactions from the fans. One Rajasthan Royals fan commented on Gambhir's tweet by using an image of Jos Buttler and used the same type of sentence Gambhir used and wrote, "There was, there is, there will be…only one owner of KKR, Jos Buttler!".

The fan-made another reply, this time he used Narine's chucking bowling action and wrote, "There was, there is, there will be…only one chucker!!".
