Punjab Kings (PBKS) took on Delhi Capitals (DC) in the second game of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 on Saturday (23rd March). The match took place at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, Chandigarh.

Punjab Kings kick-started their IPL 2024 campaign with a win as they defeated Delhi Capitals by 4 wickets in their new home ground. They produced a stellar performance with bat and ball and made sure that they gave their fans everything to cheer about.

Delhi Capitals lost the toss and were asked to bat first. They had a dream start as Mitchell Marsh (20) and David Warner (29) came out all guns blazing and put Punjab Kings’ new ball bowlers under immense pressure. They added 39 runs together before the right-hander fell to Harshal Patel.

Shai Hope (33) played a vital hand for the team while batting at No.3. His innings saw Delhi putting pressure on the opposition. Skipper Rishabh Pant, who played cricket for more than one year made a handy contribution and ended with an innings of 18 runs.

But after he got out, Delhi was left in totters. They were struggling at 138 for seven and it was then Abishek Porel came in as an impact player. He came out with a positive intent and made sure that he left a huge impact on the game at the newly built Stadium in Chandigarh.

Abishek Porel took the attack to the Punjab bowlers and hit 25 runs in the last over against Harshal Patel. He scored an unbeaten 32 runs off just 10 balls with the help of four boundaries and two sixes. his effort with the bat powered Delhi to 174 for nine.

For Punjab Kings, Arshdeep Singh was the pick of the bowlers as he picked up two wickets and gave away only 28 runs. Apart from him, Harshal Patel also picked two wickets whereas Kagiso Rabada, Harpreet Brar and Rahul Chahar picked one wicket each for the team.

Skipper Shikhar Dhawan (22) then took Punjab off the aggressive start as he played magnificently shots at the top and put pressure on the opposition. He added 34 runs for the opening stand with Jonny Bairstow (9) to set the platform for the chase.

But both the Punjab Kings openers perished in the fifth over as Delhi made their way back into the game. Impact player Prabhsimran Singh (26) played a cameo that lifted the crowd and provided much-needed momentum to the team with his power-hitting.

But he along with Jitesh Sharma (9) lost their wickets at crucial junctures. With Punjab Kings tumbling at 100/4, Sam Curran (63) slammed a brilliant half-century that brought his team back in the game and got them close to the target.

Liam Livingstone (38*) counter-attacked the Delhi bowlers and added 67 runs with Curran. While the left-hander got out, Livingstone in the end stayed unbeaten and took his team home as Punjab Kings won the game by four wickets.
