Gujarat Titans (GT) skipper Shubman Gill has been fined for maintaining a slow over-rate during the team’s recent loss to Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Shubman Gill is the first captain to receive a fine for a slow over-rate in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season.

The Ruturaj Gaikwad-led team secured their second successive victory in the ongoing marquee tournament. The Chennai-based franchise achieved a comfortable 63-run victory at their home ground, MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, on Tuesday, March 26.

Shubman Gill has been handed a ₹12 lakh fine from the IPL Governing Council for a slow over-rate, marking his first offense in the tournament.

The IPL issued an official statement confirming the fine imposed on the GT skipper for his team’s slow over rate during their recent match. It was his team’s first offense of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offenses.

“Shubman Gill, the Gujarat Titans captain, has been fined after his team maintained a slow over rate during their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 match against Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on March 26. As it was his team’s first offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over rate offences, Gill was fined ₹12 lakh,” IPL said in an official statement.

Following Hardik Pandya’s departure to the Mumbai Indians, Gill assumed leadership of the team. The young opener led the team to victory against the Mumbai team in his debut match as captain on Sunday. However, he failed to maintain the winning momentum.

Rachin Ravindra showcased aggressive batting after CSK chose to bat first, scoring a rapid 46 off just 20 balls to set the tone for the innings. The left-handed opener formed a 62-run partnership with Ruturaj Gaikwad before being dismissed by leg spinner Rashid Khan.

Ruturaj Gaikwad received an early stroke of luck when he was dropped at first slip in the opening over. However, he fell short of a half-century, being dismissed for 46 runs. Shivam Dube then contributed crucial runs in the middle order, helping the team reach 206 runs.

Shubman Gill failed to make an impact with the bat during the run chase. The right-handed batter was dismissed for eight runs off five balls during the third over. The Titans struggled to dominate the Super Kings, managing only 143 runs in their allotted 20 overs.

The Ahmedabad-based franchise will face Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, March 31st. The Gujarat Titans are in sixth place in the 10-team table with two points and an NRR (Net Run Rate) of -1.425.

The Chennai team has maintained its place at the top of the table with four points from two matches. Their next encounter is scheduled against the Delhi Capitals in Visakhapatnam on Sunday, March 31.
