The Mumbai Indians (MI) suffered a six-run defeat against the Gujarat Titans (GT) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 match. The Mumbai Indians team appeared divided, with Tilak Varma and Ishan Kishan taking opposing sides following their loss in the match.

Shubman Gill secured his first victory as GT skipper, while Hardik Pandya debuted as MI captain without leading his team to success. Once again, the Mumbai Indians team faced disappointment in their opening match, this time in Ahmedabad on Sunday, March 24.

Pandya’s debut as MI captain began on a sour note as he faced boos from fans at the toss. The 30-year-old all-rounder failed to make an impact with the ball, conceding 30 runs from three overs. He was dismissed for 11 runs off four deliveries during the chase.

After the match, Hardik Pandya awkwardly hugged Rohit Sharma, sparking an animated conversation between the two cricketers. Pandya approached Rohit from behind for a hug, but the former MI skipper’s frustrated reaction resulted in an intense exchange.

A video circulating on social media captured Rohit Sharma conversing with Jasprit Bumrah and Piyush Chawla, while Ishan Kishan was seen engaged in discussion with Shubman Gill.

Hardik Pandya chose to bowl first after winning the toss in their first match of the season. The decision paid off for MI as Jasprit Bumrah’s outstanding performance restricted GT to 168 runs in their allotted 20 overs. Bumrah took three wickets for 14 runs in four overs.

MI appeared on track for a straightforward victory as they crossed the 100-run mark with eight wickets in hand. Rohit Sharma scored 43 off 29 balls, including seven fours and a six. Rohit caught LBW while attempting a sweep against left-arm spinner Sai Kishore.

The Mumbai Indians’ opener’s dismissal shifted the game’s momentum in favor of the Gujarat Titans. Dewald Brevis was caught by Mohit Sharma after scoring 46 runs off 38 deliveries. Tilak Varma scored 25 runs off 19 balls before being dismissed by Spencer Johnson.

Tim David scored 11 runs off 10 balls before being dismissed by Mohit Sharma. Hardik Pandya managed a six and a boundary when 19 runs off the final over. However, he was dismissed by Umesh Yadav, contributing to the Mumbai Indians’ narrow defeat by six runs.

It Was Hard To Hit Those Short Balls – Shubman Gill

GT skipper Shubman Gill praised his team’s composure in handling the dew and credited the spinners for keeping them competitive throughout the game. He highlighted the challenge of batting on a slowing wicket towards the end of the match.

“The way the boys held their nerves with dew coming in, it was outstanding. The way our spinners bowled made sure we are always in the game. It’s all about holding your nerves. He (Sai Sudharsan) has been a revelation for us. We just wanted to build on the pressure and wait for them to make mistakes. The crowd is one thing, have always come whether it is a day game or a night game and shout out to all the fans who have come here to support us. I thought that was a good score, but we definitely left at least 15 runs there, it was hard to hit those short balls as the wicket got a bit slow towards the end,” Gill said.
