As soon as he drove a full delivery outside off from Daryl Mitchell, Mayank Agarwal, on 96, knew it was racing to the fence despite a deep point trying to run across and chase it.

He raised his arm as he started to run. Upon its completion, Mayank Agarwal jumped in the air, roaring in delight, and embraced in a warm hug from Wriddhiman Saha, before taking out his helmet and acknowledging the applause from the dressing room and the crowd as he had notched up his fourth Test century.

Mayank Agarwal, who got the chance to open in absence of Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul, grabbed the opportunity nicely just ahead of the South Africa tour. His home average has now rocketed to 91.12; all 4 of his centuries have come at home, two of which are double hundreds.

After winning the toss, India had started really well with the bat against the New Zealand pacers with Mayank Agarwal and Shubman Gill’s 80-run opening stand. However, Ajaz Patel snapped up three quick wickets – Gill, Cheteshwar Pujara, and Virat Kohli – to leave India at 80/3.

Mayank Agarwal had been more conscious at leaving balls in Mumbai than in the first Test in Kanpur. But made sure to keep on with the attacking intent; he has hit three sixes in innings so far.

The opener often used his feet against Patel and other Kiwi spinners to keep throwing them off their lengths, which he would also capitalize on whenever any spinner dropped short of went too full.

He was also astute in handling the New Zealand pacers, Tim Southee and Kyle Jamieson, and respected them with plenty of leaves and defensive shots, but was almost complete control against the spinners once he was set.

Mayank Agarwal then was joined by Shreyas Iyer for another 80-run stand before the latter was dismissed by Patel. The opener soon brought up his century as India rely on him to take them through to the day and to a good total.
