R Ashwin gave India their first breakthrough in the Kanpur Test against New Zealand, breaking the 151-run opening partnership between Tom Lathan and Will Young with the latter’s wicket.

It took 66 overs for India to claim their first wicket, and 21 for R Ashwin as Young departed 11 runs short of what would have been his maiden Test century. Plenty of credit should be given to KS Bharat as well, who was substituting in for Wriddhiman Saha, who did not take the field on Day 3 due to stiffness in his neck.

It was a flat delivery from R Ashwin outside the off-stump, clocked at 92 kph, which didn’t turn and went straight but kept low. Young, who had batted really well against R Ashwin till then, looked to work it on the offside, but managed a healthy outside edge which Bharat grabbed smartly, crouching low.

Both Ashwin and KS Bharat went up in loud appeal but umpire Nitin Menon turned down the appeal. Bharat immediately gestured the ‘T’ signal to skipper Ajinkya Rahane, asking him to take the DRS, which he did. The UltraEgde showed a thick outside edge and Menon was asked to change his decision, as R Ashwin broke the opening pair.

Tom Latham has ridden on his luck with overturning three DRS calls on Day 2 and then India chose not to use a review when he was trapped lbw by Ashwin on Day 3. Skipper Kane Williamson has joined him in the middle as the Kiwis eye a first-innings lead.
