Indian cricketer Gurkeerat Mann, who plays for Punjab in domestic cricket, has made a big revelation, stating that Shubman Gill’s father, Lakhwinder Gill, was not quite happy with his son’s century against Sri Lanka in the third ODI of the three-match series. Mann was hopeful that Shubman’s father would finally be pleased to see him convert his century into a double ton.

Shubman Gill smashed terrific 116 runs off 97 balls, including 14 fours and 2 sixes, before being cleaned up by Kasun Rajitha in the 34th over while playing a cross-batted stroke at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday, January 15.

Gurkeerat Mann revealed that Shubman’s father, Lakhwinder, was upset after he got dismissed for 116 against Sri Lanka after getting off to a brilliant start.

“You see how he is getting out, even after he scored a century, he had enough time to score a double century. He will not get these starts all the time. When will he learn?” Gurkeerat Mann narrates the lament he heard from Shubman’s father at his residence on Sunday, as quoted by the Indian Express.

Meanwhile, Shubman converted his century into a double century in the ODI series opener against New Zealand. He smashed amazing 208 runs off 149 balls, including 19 fours and 9 sixes, on Wednesday, January 18, at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Uppal, Hyderabad.

Mann mentioned that Shubman’s father expects big things from the opening batsman. He added that he was delighted to see Shubman convert a good start into a big score.

“Lakhwinder paaji always had high expectations from Shubman. We all had, right from his childhood days. It is good to see him finally converting his starts and I hope Lakhwinder paaji will be pleased today,” Mann said.

A cricketer of his calibre will always be under pressure to perform – Gurkeerat Mann on Shubman Gill

Mann further said that Shubman was never out of form and he has been consistently registering double-digit scores. However, he feels that the 23-year-old will always be under pressure to perform because people expect a lot from him.

“He has always been scoring those 40s and 50s. But that century was not coming. The form was never an issue. A batter is out of form if he is struggling to get into double digits. He was always getting those starts. But a cricketer of his calibre will always be under pressure to perform. People will always expect him to score big runs.”

“He has realised that his strength lies in playing with a straight bat. In Bangladesh, he got out playing a paddle sweep and even in the first ODI against Sri Lanka, he was trapped in front while playing a cross-batted shot. He is learning every day and this is just the beginning of a great career,” Mann was quoted as saying by the Indian Express.
