India will take on New Zealand in the third and final T20I of the three-match series at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, on Wednesday, February 1. Former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer feels that this generation of batters like pace on the ball and are elite hitters of the fast bowling.

Indian batters struggled to play against spin bowling in the ongoing New Zealand T20 series. The Men in Blue restricted the Black Caps to 99 runs for the loss of eight wickets in the second match. They found it difficult to play against the Kiwi spinners, and took 19.5 overs to chase down the 100-run target.

The Batter Will Be More Aggressive Or More Proactive – Wasim Jaffer

Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, the former Indian opener admitted that the Indian batters had problems against spin bowling and said that modern-day batters try to attack the bowler to get out of trouble, leading to their downfall against spinners.

“Nowadays batters usually find their way out of trouble by hitting the bowlers out of the attack. It’s not what it used to be in our time where you were trained or told to play out the spell,” Wasim Jaffer said.

“Even in the seaming conditions, nowadays the batter will probably try to go out of the way and take the bowler out of the attack. The batter will be more aggressive or more proactive,” he added.

Indian Batters Do Not Play Spin As Good As The Past Players – Wasim Jaffer

Wasim Jaffer said the batters don’t have time to play out the spell because they need to hit from the start. He added that they are more focused on fast bowling and don’t play domestic cricket to face more spin bowling.

“In our time, we were told to play out the spell, but T20 does not allow you to do that. Even the Indian batters do not play spin as good as the past players in my time. This is definitely a concern, but it is just the upbringing. The focus is more on fast bowling and you don’t get to play a lot of spin in the domestic circuit as well,” he concluded.
