Shubman Gill batted cautiously while opening the innings with skipper Rohit Sharma and the duo provided India with a good start in the match. The opening pair added 60 runs in 73 balls.

The Punjab-born batter then added 28 and 22 runs with Virat Kohli and Ishan Kishan respectively. Gill’s second-best partnership of the innings came with the middle-order batter Suryakumar Yadav as they stitched together brilliant 65 runs in 53 balls.

After starting slow, Gill managed to reach the 50-run milestone in just 52 deliveries, with 9 fours and 1 six. He then accelerated and managed to complete his ton in just 87 balls, with 14 fours and 2 sixes.

Shubman Gill looked quite fluent in the middle and as the innings progressed he kept getting better. He played some of the most beautiful-looking shots against the good Kiwi bowling unit and completed 150 runs off 122, with 19 fours and 3 sixes.

Shubman Gill next added 74 runs in 67 balls with Hardik Pandya, 43 runs in 32 balls with Washington Sundar, 10 runs in 10 balls with Shardul Thakur and 43 runs in 16 balls with Kuldeep Yadav.

In the 49th over, Shubman Gill went berserk against the express pacer Lockie Ferguson and smashed three sensational-looking sixes on the first three balls to bring up his double century. He reached the spectacular milestone off 145 balls, including 19 fours and 8 sixes.

Henry Shipley dismissed Gill on the second ball of the 50th over and the young batting sensation slammed amazing 208 runs off 149 balls, including 19 fours and 9 sixes. Gill batted with a splendid strike rate of 139.6.

Talking about records, Shubman Gill has become the youngest player to score a double century in ODIs – at 23 years, 132 days – surpassing his teammate Ishan Kishan. Shubman Gill is the overall 8th batsman and 5th Indian to score 200 in ODIs, after Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan.

His 208 against the Black Caps is the highest individual score by an Indian against New Zealand in the history of ODIs. He surpassed Sachin Tendulkar’s 186*, which came in 1999. Also, he has the highest individual score in ODI in Hyderabad.
