The 23-year-old “generational talent” Shubman Gill played a terrific knock in the first ODI of the three-match series against the Tom Latham-led New Zealand National Cricket Team at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Uppal, Hyderabad on Wednesday, January 18.
India won the toss and elected to bat first in the match. Opening batsman Gill once again provided India with a good start in the match alongside skipper Rohit Sharma.

The opening duo added 60 runs in 73 balls before Blair Tickner broke the partnership by dismissing Rohit in the 13th over. Gill then added 28 and 22 runs with Virat Kohli and Ishan Kishan respectively. Gill’s best partnership came with the middle-order batter Suryakumar Yadav as they stitched together brilliant 65 runs in 53 balls.
Despite not starting off his innings aggressively, Gill managed to reach the 50-run milestone in just 52 deliveries, with 9 fours and 1 six. He then accelerated even further and managed to complete his back-to-back ODI centuries in just 87 balls, with 14 fours and 2 sixes.

The Punjab-born batter Shubman Gill smashed a six to Mitchell Santner on the second ball of the 30th over and on the next ball, he took a single to register his 3rd ODI ton. He removed his helmet and brought out his trademark celebration.
Notably, Shubman Gill scored his first ODI century against Zimbabwe in Harare in August 2022 and his second century was against Sri Lanka in Thiruvananthapuram in the third ODI of the series.
Talking about records, Shubman Gill has become the second-fastest Indian to score 3 ODI centuries. Gill has achieved the milestone in his 19th innings and he is just behind Shikhar Dhawan, who achieved the landmark in 17 innings.
Shubman Gill also surpassed Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan to become the fastest Indian to complete 1000 ODI runs by achieving the milestone in his 19th innings. Previously, Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan were the joint-fastest Indian batters to the 1000-run mark in ODIs. Both took 24 innings to get there.
Overall, Gill is the joint-second fastest to achieve the 1000 ODI runs feat in the world alongside Imam-ul-Haq. Fakhar Zaman holds the record for the fastest 1000 ODI runs as he achieved the milestone in 18 innings.

There's inevitability around Shubman Gill the ODI batter. If he plays 300ish ODIs as an opener (which is very improbable), he'll be smashing all records

Shubman Gill is fast learning the art of crafting innings in ODIs. Dispatched all loose balls to boundary but most importantly milked singles adroitly after the Powerplay & maintained a superb tempo.
He doesn't throw away wicket after a good start. #CricketTwitter #ShubmanGill

CENTURY! When you are in form, you must keep going and get as many as you can. Terrific batting from Gill and he continues to top the run charts in ODIs, his best format I feel. Making tons is a habit, good to see him get it early. #CricketTwitter #ShubmanGill pic.twitter.com/JU3esm4wBq
