Jacques Kallis can be justified with the tag of the best all-rounder for South Africa to date. Jacques Kallis is a former South African player and coach who played for the side in the last decade of the 20th century and the first decade of the 21st century.
Jacques Kallis was a right-handed batsman and right-arm medium pacer who played 150 ODIs and 300 Tests for South Africa National Cricket. He was also part of the South Africa team that won the ICC Champions Trophy in 1998. He is also inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame.
Family and Personal Life
Jacques Kallis was born on October 16, 1975, in Cape Town South Africa to Henry and Mercia Kallis. He grew up in the Pinewood area with his only sister Janine Kallis, who is a physiotherapist by profession. He married Charles Engels in 2019 and the couple has a son named Joshua.
Early and Domestic Career
Jacques Kallis broke into the domestic circuit in 1993 when Western Province picked him into their squad. He also played for teams like Middlesex, Glamorgan, Cape Cobras, and Warriors during his active career. Just two years after his entry in the domestic circuit, the all-rounder made his international debut for South Africa.
International Career
Jacques Kallis made his international debut in December 1995 with a Test match against England in Durban. He went on to play 166 Tests, 328 ODIs, and 25 T20Is during his career till 2014. He played his last ODI against Sri Lanka.
In Tests, the South African stalwart went on to smack 13289 runs at 55+ average with 45 tons and 2 double tons. In ODIs, he mustered 11579 runs with 17 centuries and 86 fifties. In T20Is, he piled up 666 runs at 35+ average.
Kallis was also impressive with the ball, getting 292 wickets in Tests, 273 in ODIs, and 12 in T20Is. He also had a brilliant economy of 4.84 in ODIs and 7.24 in Tests. Hence, Kallis finished as a spectacular seam all-rounder for South Africa.
Franchise Career
Kallis was quite active in the Indian Premier League and played for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the first three seasons. Later, he joined Kolkata Knight Riders for the next four seasons from 2011 to 2014. He also played for Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League and Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean Premier League.
