Jitesh Sharma is an Indian wicketkeeper-batsman who considers MS Dhoni as his idol. Like MSD, Jitesh Sharma bats in the lower middle order and has also tasted some success in the Indian Premier League and Indian team.
Sharma is a right-handed batsman and wicketkeeper. He made his international debut during the Asian Games 2023 when he played for Team India against Nepal. The wicketkeeper has played a handful of T20I games for the men-in-blue.
Known for his hard-hitting batting style down the order, Jitesh Sharma is an emerging wicketkeeper for India. However, he also faces tough competition in the keeper's category, which has observed a high rise of players in recent years.
Early Life and Career
Jitesh Sharma was born on October 22, 1993, in Amravati City in Maharashtra. His father Mohan Sharma hails from Kangra City in Himachal Pradesh. He also has a younger brother Nilesh Sharma. Jitesh was born and brought up in a middle-class family in Amravati.
Sharma's cricket journey began in his school days when he joined his school cricket team. He was an adventurous boy and always interested in sports than academics.
His school team played at the state level. He got his first break in 2013 when the domestic team Vidarbha team picked him after a successful show in Cooch Behar Trophy 2012-13.
After successive shows in the domestic circuit and IPL, Jitesh Sharma got a chance to make his international debut in October 2023, when he was picked in the India squad for the Asian Games 2023. Later, he also featured in the T20I series against Australia, South Africa, and Afghanistan.
IPL Career
Mumbai Indians grabbed Jitesh Sharma in the 2016 season for Rs. 20 lakh. However, the franchise did not feature him in any game for many seasons. Later, Punjab Kings captured the wicketkeeper batter in the IPL 2022 mega auction for Rs. 20 lakh, when he also made his IPL debut.
Jitesh Sharma justified his selection in the team, hitting 234 runs in 12 games in IPL 2024 at a strike rate of 163+. Next year, he went further with 309 runs in 14 games at 156+ average. Sharma played match-winning knocks in the death overs in some games, which caught the attention of BCCI selectors.
Sharma has only played a handful of T20I games for Team India but has decent experience in the domestic circuit. He is a powerful lower-order batter with his high strike rate and hard-hitting style. Wicketkeeping skills add another advantage to his profile.
