"A wonderful wicketkeeper"- these words truly define Wriddhiman Saha's short career in international cricket. Although Saha is not a member of the national team, he is an active member of the Indian Premier League.
Wriddhiman Saha is a right-handed batsman who used to play in the middle. However, he also played as an opener in IPL. He is another wicketkeeper who always played during MS Dhoni's absence.
Saha made his international debut in 2010. However, due to MS Dhoni's permanent spot as a wicketkeeper, he only played a limited number of games for the national team.
Early Life and Career
Wriddhiman Saha was born on October 24, 1984, in Siliguri City in West Bengal. His father Prashanta Saha was a government officer. He grew up with his elder brother Anirban Saha. He married Romi Saha in 2011 and the couple has two children.
He trained with his childhood coach Jayanta Bhowmik. In 2007, he was picked by the Bengal team in domestic cricket. After a consistent performance for three years, he got a chance to represent Team India. Saha's career clashed with MS Dhoni.
International Career
Although Wriddhiman Saha played less than 50 international games across all formats, his career spanned from 2010 to 2021. Saha has not announced his retirement from international cricket, however, his comeback seems almost impossible.
He made his international debut in February 2010 with a Test match against South Africa. He went on to play a total of 40 Tests for India till 2021, a lot of which came in the absence of Dhoni from the national team.
Saha also played a few ODI games for India, however, he was overlooked for the limited-overs format and was largely considered a Test specialist.
After MS Dhoni's retirement in 2019, Saha became the primary choice of wicketkeeper for India in Tests. However, with the emergence of young wicketkeepers, selectors decided to invest in the younger generation and Saha gradually lost his place in the national team.
IPL Career
Despite being considered a Test specialist, Wriddhiman Saha was a regular member in Indian Premier League. The wicketkeeper-batsman played for Kolkata Knight Riders from 2008 to 2012.
He joined Chennai Super Kings from 2011 to 2013 and also won the title in the 2011 season. From 2014 to 2017, Punjab Kings kept him in their squad. He later represented Sunrisers Hyderabad from 2018 to 2921.
Gujarat Titans picked him in the 2022 season and have retained him over the years. Saha has played over 170 games in the Indian Premier League and also holds the record for scoring a century.
Interestingly, Saha played only a few games in almost every season due to his inconsistent batting form. However, some of his notable outings were IPL 2020 (214 runs in 4 games), IPL 2022 (317 runs), and IPL 2023 *(371 runs).
