Lethal Hard-Hitting batsman! These words are perfect for Yusuf Pathan who was always known for his might with the bat in Indian cricket. While many former cricketers switch to commentator or coaching roles, Yusuf Pathan is one of the few who has become a politician.
Yusuf Pathan is a right-handed batsman who played for India for a short period from 2008 to 2012. However, he was a mighty batter known for smacking big sixes. He also used to bowl as an occasional spinner. He was part of the Indian team that won the ICC ODI World Cup 2011 under skipper MS Dhoni.
Family and Personal Life
Yusuf Pathan was born on November 17, 1982 in Baroda to Mehmood and Samimbanu Pathan. He had one brother Irfan Pathan, who also played for India and is an active commentator. He also had a sister named Shagufta Pathan. He married Afreen Khan and the couple has a son named Ayaan Pathan.
Early and Domestic Career
Yusuf Pathan joined Baroda Domestic team in 2001 and was a member of the team till 2020. He impressed with his performances in the Deodhar Trophy 2007 which helped him to get a place in the ICC T20 World Cup 2007, where a young team led by MS Dhoni won the title.
Interestingly, Yusuf Pathan was part of both the Indian team that won the T20 World Cup in 2007 and the ODI World Cup in 2011. Hence, he was part of the national team when it was at its peak during the MS Dhoni era.
International Career
Pathan made his international debut in a T20I game against Pakistan in 2007. It was India's match against Pakistan in T20 World Cup 2007, where Yusuf scored 15 runs as the opener. Since he was a hard-hitting batter, he only played in ODIs and T20Is.
He played 57 ODIs and 22 T20Is during his five-year stay in the Indian Team from 2007 to 2012. He slammed 810 runs in ODIs with 2 centuries and 3 half-centuries. In T20Is, he mustered 236 runs at a stunning strike rate of 146+. In February 2021, he retired from all forms of cricket.
IPL Career
Yusuf Pathan had a highly successful career in the Indian Premier League. He played 174 matches and shattered 3204 runs at a strike rate of 142+. He played a big role in leading Rajasthan Royals to the title in their debut season. His 37-ball-100 is still dubbed as one of the best knocks in IPL history.
He was part of Rajasthan Royals from IPL 2008 to 2010. Later, he played for Kolkata Knight Riders from 2011 to 2017. He also won the title with KKR in the 2012 and 2014 season. During his final few seasons in IPL from 2018 to 2019, he was a member of Sunrisers Hyderabad.
