Young cricketer Abdullah Shafique has responded to Wasim Akram’s critique of his celebration during the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2024. Abdullah Shafique acknowledged Wasim Akram’s opinion, considering his extensive cricketing background and expertise.
In the PSL 2024 match between Lahore Qalandars and Islamabad United, Abdullah Shafique garnered attention for his unique ‘silent’ celebration. The young player placed his finger over his mouth following a remarkable catch that dismissed Imad Wasim on March 6.
First Of All, It Is His Opinion – Abdullah Shafique On Wasim Akram
Following Karachi Kings’ victory over Lahore Qalandars, Abdullah Shafique addressed Wasim Akram’s critique during the post-match press conference. He clarified that his celebratory gesture was a spontaneous reaction, without any deliberate intent.
“First of all, it is his [Wasim Akram] opinion. It is ok if he is saying that because he has played cricket and he knows better. There was no thought process behind the celebration. It was just a gesture in the heat of the moment,” Shafique said.
Abdullah demonstrated his batting skill with a resilient half-century during the match against Karachi Kings. He scored 55 off 39 balls, which included five boundaries and a six. However, despite his efforts, the Qalandars suffered a three-wicket loss in Karachi.
Lahore posted a competitive total of 177-5. Karachi chased down the target on the final ball of the last over, keeping their playoff aspirations alive. The Shaheen Afridi-led side, already eliminated from the tournament, endured their seventh loss of the season.
Multan Sultans and Peshawar Zalmi maintain their stronghold in the table, securing playoff berths. Karachi Kings retained their fifth place and will vie for the playoffs. Islamabad United and the Quetta Gladiators occupied third and fourth spots in the table, respectively.
Despite being eliminated, the Qalandars aim to conclude their campaign positively in the upcoming last league-stage match against the Gladiators at the National Stadium in Karachi on Sunday, March 10.
Abdullah Shafique Should Work In The Drama Industry – Wasim Akram
Wasim Akram criticized Abdullah’s celebratory style, suggesting that he might be better suited for the drama industry than cricket. The former pacer pointed out Abdullah’s fielding lapses during the Test series in Australia, emphasizing the need for improvement.
“No doubt, great catch but who is responsible for dropping 36 catches in Australia’s Test series? Who will answer for that? Abdullah should work in the drama industry rather than cricket,” the former Pakistan seamer said on ASports.
Akram’s criticism of Shafique’s performance during Pakistan’s three-match Test series against Australia in December. The 24-year-old faced scrutiny for dropping crucial catches during the series, which proved costly as his team suffered a 0-3 loss in Australia.
After showcasing a strong half-century performance at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, the young batter faced disappointment with twin ducks in Sydney. The Shan Masood-led team struggled to capitalize on crucial opportunities throughout the Test series.
