Quetta Gladiators spinner Usman Tariq has been reported for a suspect bowling action in the ongoing PSL season. His action was objected to by on-field Richard Illingworth and Asif Yaqoob.

The incident happened in the PSL 2024 match between the Quetta Gladiators and the Karachi Kings. The low-scoring match was secured by Karachi Kings but not before the off-spinner’s action was reported.

Meanwhile, the Gladiators management has requested the PCB to allow Usman to have a bowling action test that will be happening under the board’s jurisdiction in due course.

“Quetta Gladiators spinner Usman Tariq was reported for a suspect bowling action during the HBL PSL 9 fixture between Quetta Gladiators and Karachi Kings on 6 March at the Pindi Cricket Stadium in Rawalpindi.

“The Quetta Gladiators team management has requested the PCB to allow Usman to undergo the bowling action test which will take place at a PCB-approved facility in due course,” PCB said in an official media release.

The two officiating umpires Richard Illingworth and Asif Yaqoob saw enough doubt in the off-spinner’s bowling action to report it. Senior Pakistan sports journalist Shahid Hashmi explained the reason why his bowling action was reported. He said that the off-spinner’s pause in his delivery stride before delivering the ball caused enough doubt in the umpires’ minds to report it as illegal.

He further explained that Tariq’s stock deliveries are the off-break, leg break, and the carrom-ball. While he has a number of tricks up his sleeve his delivery stride and his pause are the two basic reasons why his action has been reported. The spinner has taken two wickets in the three games he played.

Meanwhile, Karachi Kings won the match against the Gladiators chasing. They chased down 119 inside just 16 overs and won the match by seven wickets. The win keeps their playoff hopes alive. The Gladiators despite the defeat are placed second on the points table.

Saud Shakeel scored 33 in the Quetta Gladiators batting innings which was the top score in their batting effort. Hard-hitting opener Jason Roy scored just 15, while skipper Rilee Rossouw scored just 10. Six Quetta Gladiators batters were dismissed for single-digit scores. Thus the lower-order could not contribute anything substantial to the score.

The Kings’ batting effort was led by Tim Seifert who scored 49 off 31 balls. 27 each by Shoaib Malik and James Vince also contributed to the team’s victory. Hasan Ali’s four-wicket spell earlier brought the Quetta batting effort down to its knees. He was also announced as the Player of the Match for his efforts.

“We all know the conditions are not suitable for fast bowling here, I am a strong believer that if you bowl the right line and lenghts then you can succeed. As a bowling unit we speak about getting early wickets and bowling the right areas, lucky we won the toss today. I am happy with my performances, whenever the captain has given me the ball I have delivered. I have been working really hard for the past two months. We have a new born baby in the house and I want to dedicate my award to her,” said Hasan Ali in the post-match presentation.

The PSL 2024 table is now taking shape for the playoffs. Multan Sultans are topping the table with 12 points followed by the Gladiators and Peshawar Zalmi with nine each. Islamabad United are on seven points, Karachi Kings six and the defending champions Lahore Qalandars finally boarded some points with their win over Islamabad.
