Pakistan leg-spinner Usama Mir wrote history last night during PSL 9’s match number 14 between Multan Sultans and reigning champions Lahore Qalandars at the Gaddafi Stadium. The Sultans extend their lead on top of the points table with a commanding win on the back of Usama’s historic first-wicket haul in the entirety of the Pakistan Super League.

No other bowler in the tournament’s history has ever been able to register 6 wickets in a match but Usama Mir’s efforts made it possible last night. He complimented the batting brilliance of teammate and number 3 batter Usman Khan who smacked a dominating 96 off 55 balls.

Another win for Mohammad Rizwan led Multan Sultans

The runners-up from season 8 are looking like the only team that is in sublime form at the moment. Their track record this season has just been exceptional as the Mohammad Rizwan-led team has lost just once in their first 6 games. Multan Sultans currently find themselves with 10 points with the best net run rate of 1.154.

Despite Rizwan’s 5-ball duck from the opening slot, the Sultans were able to manage a total of 200+ in a flat batting surface in Lahore. They won the toss and chose the best decision to bat which was proved right by Rizwan’s partner Reeza Hendricks and Usman Khan. The duo first stood for a 74-run partnership for the second wicket before Hendricks departed for 40 off 27.

Then Usman Khan stood for another crucial partnership with number 4 Tayyab Tahir who scored a quickfire 21 off 14, taking Sultans from 74/2 to 151/3. Iftikhar Ahmed who came in at number 5, stood for another important partnership with Usman of 60 runs as the former smacked 40 off just 18 at a daunting strike rate of 222. Usman Khan was unfortunate to have got out for 96 in the 4th delivery of the final over. Their acts were then supported by leg-spinner Usama Mir.

Usama Mir decimates Shaheen Afridi’s Qalandars

In a flat batting surface like the one at the Gaddafi stadium, a target of 214 at times might look easy to chase down. However, the Lahore Qalandars batters had no clue whatsoever in front of the expensive but effective Sultan’s bowling attack. Led by pacer Khushdil Shah, the Sultans kept taking wickets at regular intervals but the highlight was Usama Mir whose trickery was too confusing to understand.

Despite conceding 10 runs per over in his quota of 4, Usama Mir was able to rack up 6 wickets. This was the first time a bowler in PSL had done so in a match. After Khushdil and Aftab Ibrahim took the opening 2 wickets and Faisal Akram removed another 2, Usama Mir chipped in.

The leg-spinner’s first wicket of the night was the dangerous top-order batsman Rassie Van Der Dussen for 30 off 42. His next wickets were of skipper Shaheen Afridi and George Linde. Usama Mir was in fact on a hat-trick after as he removed Jahandad Khan in the very next bowl after Linde’s dismissal.

Lahore Qalandars were reduced to 8 wickets for just 132 and in his final over, Usama Mir finished off the batting tail by claiming Salman Fayyaz and Zaman Khan. The wrist spinner ended with figures of 6/40 but it was Usman Khan who walked away with the man of the match award.
