Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram has slammed Abdullah Shafique for his over-the-top celebration after taking a catch in PSL 2024 match. Akram was livid with the top-order batter for his aggressive celebration against Islamabad United in PSL 2024.

The incident happened in the last ball of the sixth over of the Islamabad United run chase. They side already lost five wickets inside the powerplay and Imad Wasim was the fifth wicket to fall. Wasim edged the ball from David Wiese to Shafique who was standing at first flip.

It was a relatively easy catch that he took during to his right. However, it was his unnecessary finger-on-the-lip celebration that irked Akram. The bowling great slammed him for his aggressive celebration, saying that he is answerable for the catches that he dropped in the Test series against Australia in Australia. As it turned out, Pakistan lost the series 3-0.

“Jo 36 catch chodd ke aaya hai Australia mein uska kaun jawab dega. Brilliant catch, no doubt, great catch. Unko kaho ki cricket chodo aur drame mein aake kaam karo. Jo 36 catch chodd ke aaya hai vo bhi to bata de naa humein fir, ispe aise karke chup karane hai sab critics ko toh,” Akram said while speaking on A Sports show, The Pavilion.

Meanwhile, this was the first win for Lahore Qalandars in this edition of the PSL. The defending champions lost six on the trot before finally bagging their first win against the Islamabad side. Their previous match against Peshawar Zalmi was abandoned due to rain. They now have just two more league games remaining against Karachi Kings and Quetta Gladiators on March 9 and 10. Even two back-to-back wins will not be enough to see them make the playoffs.

Shaheen Afridi, the Lahore Qalandars skipper took 2/32 while defending the total successfully. Zaman Khan was the chief wicket-taker with 4/37. In the process, Shaheen became the quickest 1oo wickets in the PSL. It was his 69th match for the franchise for whom he has been playing since 2018.

“Our overall cricket was good in the first 5 games, although results weren’t on our side. Such is the nature of T20 cricket. I think the new ball was moving around, so we thought 150-160 would be a good total. We realised if we bowl it on a length then it will be difficult for batters. We are 2-time champions, we play with the pride of Lahore Qalandars. Very proud of the way Tayyab Abbas performed today, the whole objective of our franchise is to unearth talent from all parts of the country and nurture them to play for Pakistan. The full credit for that goes to the scouting team of Lahore Qalandars” said Shaheen after leading his team to their first win of the campaign.

Seven more league games remain in PSL 2024. The playoffs will be played on March 14, 15 and 16 in Karachi followed by the final on March 17.
