Wasim Jaffer, a former India opener, believes that the series finale between India and South Africa is crucial for the young players from India who are trying to establish themselves as future starters.

India won the second ODI thanks largely to the outstanding performances of Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan.

In two of the three ODI matches between India and South Africa that have been played so far, each team has won one match, leaving the series tied at one game remaining.

South Africa was defeated by India by 7 wickets in the second ODI. South Africa chose to bat first in that match after winning the toss. Reeza Hendricks and Aiden Markram scored 74 and 79 runs for South Africa, respectively, as they batted first and put 278 runs on the board. Mohammed Siraj took three wickets for India.

Coming to bat next, India successfully batted down the target in the 46th over, where Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer each scored 93 and 113 runs to lead their team to a significant victory.

The players will be attempting to make one last case for themselves before attention turns to the T20 World Cup in Australia, as per Wasim Jaffer, who spoke to ESPNcricinfo ahead of the game.

“All these youngsters who are playing the game, there is a lot on the line for them for the future series, for the future selections,” Wasim Jaffer said ahead of the decider.

“Another good performance from them will highlight their selections in the future games and there is a series on the line as well,” Wasim Jaffer further added.

India will be facing South Africa in the series decider at New Delhi on Tuesday, 11 October.
