Sanju Samson has arguably the largest fan base of all the young cricketers, and this was evident all over the world.

Even though Samson is not on the Indian team for the South Africa series, chanting of “Sanju Sanju” were unavoidable now that the team is in Samson’s hometown of Thiruvananthapuram.

Before the 2022 Asia Cup, Team India travelled to England, Ireland, the West Indies, and Zimbabwe over the summer for a rather thorough overseas white-ball season. Since a few first-choice players rested during most of those series, other players were allowed to play for India more frequently in both T20I and ODI matches.

Sanju Samson, who does not play regularly for the white-ball team, was in and out of the lineup during the overseas tours, but the 27-year-old, who is one of the favourites among fans, is fortunate to have such strong support everywhere he goes. Every time Samson was selected for India’s starting XI, whether it was against Ireland, the West Indies, or Zimbabwe, the Indian community there was solidly behind him.

With the Indian team now in Thiruvananthapuram, cries of ‘Sanju Sanju’ were unavoidable. Even though Samson was not on the Indian team, there was a ‘Sanju Samson craze’ as the team came to the city, Samson’s hometown.

While Ravichandran Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal uploaded photos of a loud crowd shouting Samson’s name surrounding the team bus, batsman Suryakumar Yadav won millions of hearts in Thiruvananthapuram on Monday.

Surya flashed a picture of Samson to the supporters from the bus, prompting raucous applause for the poster child of Kerala.

Samson, who has not played for India since the Zimbabwe series, is expected to make a return in the next three-match ODI series against South Africa after captaining India A in three unofficial ODIs against New Zealand A.

The young hitter would like to maintain pushing his case for a permanent spot in the side, as he has performed admirably in his limited opportunities this year.
