IND vs SL: "Ashwin And Jadeja Are On Their Path To Becoming The Most Dangerous Spin-Twins In The World," Nikhil Chopra Praises After The First IND Vs SL 2022 Test

Former Indian off-spinner Nikhil Chopra believes that Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, India’s current spin combo, are on their approach to becoming probably the most dangerous spin-twin the game has ever seen.

In Mohali, both Ashwin and Jadeja were sensational against Sri Lanka. While Jadeja took nine wickets in the game, Ashwin became India’s second-highest wicket-taker in Tests, surpassing the legendary Kapil Dev.

On Sunday, Jadeja and Ashwin both took four wickets as India dismissed Sri Lanka for 178 runs. Jadeja had taken five in the first innings in addition to scoring an unbeaten 175 during India’s innings. He has thus left one wicket away from becoming the first-ever player in the history of Test cricket to take 10 wickets and score 150 in the same match.

Ashwin, meanwhile, scored 61 runs as part of a 130-run stand with Jadeja, which was also India’s highest partnership of the match. While Jadeja had returned figures of 5/41 in the first Sri Lankan innings, Ashwin recorded 2/49. Ashwin ended the second innings with 4/47 while Jadeja returned 4/46.

Nikhil Chopra, speaking on the YouTube podcast also mentioned the threat presented by the former Indian spinning tandem of Harbhajan Singh and Anil Kumble.

“They’re on their way to becoming the world’s most deadly spin twins. But I believe Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh were a deadly combo when they bowled together in tandem.”

“Ashwin and Jadeja have great chemistry together. They won’t bowl terrible deliveries even if they aren’t picking wickets, so batsmen must try something else to make runs.”

Whatever Anil and Harbhajan have achieved, Ashwin and Jadeja are surely moving in that direction. However, at present, the achievements of Anil and Harbhajan are more than that of Ashwin and Jadeja. It is a good thing for Indian cricket that this duo is turning out to be dangerous, especially at home.

Anil Kumble and Harbhajan had a lethal partnership in SENA countries. If you see Ashwin and Jadeja, often only one of them plays and most of the time it is Jadeja. Our spinners have a different role in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia) countries because the wicket there doesn’t support spin much.
