Rohit Sharma began his term as India’s Test captain with a resounding innings victory over Sri Lanka in Mohali.
India won by an innings and 222 runs in Mohali to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series under new Test skipper Rohit Sharma. As a result, Rohit has become the first Indian captain to win an innings in his first Test match since Polly Umrigar in December 1955. . The all-round efforts of Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin were the highlights of the Test.

Rohit Sharma spoke about his thoughts on taking over as full-time test captain:
“It’s Special feeling leading the country in all three formats. It’s been a wonderful honor to serve as Test Captain of this Indian Cricket Team, I’m ecstatic to be given this opportunity. There are some additional challenges in red ball cricket, which we must address in order to win the game as much as possible for the country. So looking forward to new challenge in red ball cricket”

After Virat Kohli stood down in January, Rohit was named Test captain as the squad for the two-Test series was announced. Kohli made his 100th appearance in the longest format in the first Test in Mohali, and Rohit ensured that the former received a guard of honour from his teammates when they took the field on Day 2.
India dismissed Sri Lanka for 178 runs on Sunday, with Jadeja and Ashwin each taking four wickets. In the first innings, Jadeja had taken five wickets and scored an unbroken 175 runs for India. As a result, he was one wicket short of becoming the first player in Test cricket history to take 10 wickets and score 150 runs in the same match.
Meanwhile, Ashwin hit 61 runs in a 130-run partnership with Jadeja, which was also India’s greatest partnership of the match. In the first Sri Lankan innings, Jadeja had taken 5/41, while Ashwin had taken 2/49.
