India and Sri Lanka lock horns with each other in the first Test of the two-match series, scheduled to be held from 4th to 8th March 2022 at IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali. It is worth mentioning that India have not lost a single series at home in their last 14 Test series.

They have an outstanding record in the Test series at home and the newly appointed skipper Rohit Sharma would be looking to continue their dominant performance in a similar fashion. India and Sri Lanka have taken on each other in 44 Tests in the history of the longest format. Of those, India emerged victorious on 20 occasions, while Sri Lanka won the game 7 times. Besides, 17 Tests resulted in draws.

The upcoming Test match at Mohali also marks the 100th Test for Virat Kohli. He is no longer the captain of the Indian Test team but Kohli would want to celebrate that by ending his century drought in international cricket.

KL Rahul, who scored a century in the last Test series in South Africa, is unavailable for the series due to injury. And, thus Mayank Agarwal is likely to open the innings with Rohit Sharma.

Add to that, one could see a couple of changes taking place in the middle-order. Both Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane have been dropped from the side and the likes of Shreyas Iyer, Shubhman Gill, and Hanuma Vihari could get a chance. Rishabh Pant, who was given rest in the T20 series against Sri Lanka, will make his comeback alongside Ravindra Jadeja.

Ravichandran Ashwin is part of the squad but his availability is subject to fitness. In the fast bowling department, India have opted to include all four mainstays in Bumrah, Shami, Siraj, and Yadav.

Sri Lanka, on the other hand, would look to produce some fight and hope for winning the series after exhibiting dismal performances in the T20 series. Their recent performance does inspire a lot of confidence.

Under the leadership of Dimuth Karunaratne, Sri Lanka won their last Test series against West Indies by a 2-0 margin. Karunaratne, Nissanka, and Dhanajaya de Silva all fared pretty well with the bat in that series and would expect them to replicate similar performances in India as well.

Much to the delight of the fans, both Kusal Perera and Niroshan Dickwella will mark their return to the side after serving a one-year ban for violating Covid-19 norms during Sri Lanka’s tour of England.

The presence of Angelo Mathews will provide depth in the batting unit and also provide options with the ball.  Senior fast bowler Suranga Lakmal will be playing his last Test series.

He will be sharing fast bowling duties alongside Dushmantha Chameera and Lahiru Kumara. In Jeffrey Vandersay, Praveen Jayawickrama, Lasith Embuldeniya, they have a great spin bowling unit.
