Rohit Sharma Appointed As Captain As BCCI Announces India's Test Squad For 2-Match Home Test Series vs Sri Lanka

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on Saturday the appointment of Rohit Sharma as the new Indian Test captain while announcing India’s Test squad for the Sri Lanka tour. It is notable that Virat Kohli gave up the red-ball captaincy last month after the away series loss to South Africa.

The Indian selection committee has gone down hard on some senior players and it looks like the Ranji Trophy will be the last rope of reprieve for some senior Indian players. Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane have rested from the Test squad and Srikar Bharat has been roped in as the backup wicketkeeper. Ishant Sharma and Wriddhiman Saha have been dropped from the squads.

Rohit Sharma To Lead In Tests As BCCI Announces India’s Test Squad vs Sri Lanka

It is noteworthy that reports had emerged that both Wriddhiman Saha and Ishant Sharma had refused to play Ranji Trophy after being informed by the BCCI that they will no longer be in contention for a spot in the Test squad. Ishant, however, agreed to join the Delhi squad at the last moment while Saha opted out of the tournament.

Ravindra Jadeja has also made a comeback to international cricket with this series. It is notable that KL Rahul will be absent from the series, which can be derived from the injury that he sustained during India vs West Indies ODIs. The Sri Lanka National Cricket Team is set to arrive in India for a three-match T20I series and a two-match Test series. The tour will commence from February 24. Mohali and Bangalore are the two venues that will host the Test matches.
