Rishabh Pant broke Kapil Dev’s record of scoring the fastest fifty by an Indian in Test cricket. He scored 50 off 31 balls in the second innings against Sri Lanka in Bengaluru and helped India take a lead of over 400 in the Test match. The southpaw stitched key partnerships with Shreyas Iyer (67) and Ravindra Jadeja (22) during his knock.

Former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer lauded Pant for the approach with which he played in the second innings. On rank-tuner with the ball turning as well as keeping low, Pant hit seven fours and two sixes and decimated the Lankan spinners.

He did not bother about the conditions and just played with an attacking intent which impressed Jaffer. Talking to ESPN Cricinfo, Jaffer explained how Pant is calculative in his approach and said that there is a method to his madness.

“Looking at him, there’s a method to what he does. He comes out and attacks the first few balls. Obviously, the team (opposition) expects him to do that, but he puts the (opposition) team on the back foot, and then he plays the waiting game and then surprises with his attacking shots.

“I feel sometimes we just see that Rishabh Pant only attacks and attacks but I think there’s a lot of method to it,” said the former Indian opener.

Taking to Twitter, Wasim Jaffer hailed Rishabh Pant for consistently producing such match-defining knocks in Test cricket. He also termed Pant a mercurial batter who is consistent with his run-scoring approach.

“The frequency with which @RishabhPant17 produces such knocks is just incredible. Usually, if a batter is mercurial he’s not consistent. But in Pant we’ve a mercurial batter who’s consistent. World beater! #INDvSL” wrote Jaffer.
