On the first day of the pink-ball Test against Sri Lanka at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, Indian batter Shreyas Iyer hit a brilliant 92 to help India end with 252 on a tough wicket. Following the innings, Wasim Jaffer, a former India opener, compared Iyer to two cricket legends.
Shreyas Iyer hit a brilliant 92, on the first day of the pink-ball Test against Sri Lanka.

India struggled to get off to a good start after electing to bat first on Saturday, but Iyer saved the day with a blistering 92 off 98 balls. Despite missing out on a well-deserved century, Iyer’s remarkable innings received praise from senior cricketers.
When asked which cricketer’s knock Iyer’s 92 most closely resembles, Jaffer confessed in an interview that Smith’s stunning century against India in the Pune Test in 2017 comes closest, albeit he stressed that the Aussie played in tougher conditions.
“Even Rishabh Pant has just produced dozens of new fantastic knocks. As a result, he is most likely the closest to this team. You might also look back to Steve Smith’s century in Pune.”
“I mean, this pitch is slightly better than the one in Pune, which was a little more rigged. That knock, on the other hand, reminds us of Iyer’s knock. Whenever he got that hundred, I’d be delighted. “However, he looked excellent,” Jaffer remarked.
Wassim Jaffer thinks Shreyas Iyer plays like Laxman:

The senior batsman also praised Iyer’s ability to bat with tail-end batsmen, similar to what VVS Laxman used to do.
“He has a history of playing with the Indian team’s tail-enders and bailing them out, which is a very positive indicator for a batter who bats No. 5 or 6.” That’s something VVS used to do a lot of. He’s doing a fantastic job,” he remarked.
In the pink-ball Test, India held Sri Lanka to a score of 28/1. On Sunday, Bumrah excelled with the bat, while Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant both hit half-centuries that set new records.
