IND vs SL: Rohit Sharma Becomes 35th Indian Test Captain, Second Oldest Debut Captain In The Last 60 Years

Indian captain Rohit Sharma walked out to the toss wearing a blazer for the first time, leading the national team in the first Test against Sri Lanka that got underway on Friday.
He is the 35th Indian Test captain overall and the second oldest on captaincy debut in the last 60 years. Rohit at 34 years and 308 days is only behind Anil Kumble, who led the Test team for the first time at the age of 37 years and 36 days.
There are quite a few notable milestones in the Test. It marks Virat Kohli’s 100th Test for India, only the 12th Indian to achieve the feat. The Test is also Sri Lanka’s 300th Test in its history.

Speaking at the toss, Rohit acknowledged that it was a big moment and he was looking forward to leading the side.
“Similar Indian conditions, so it’s important for us to put runs on the board and take it from there. It is a huge honour to be captaining India and be part of the list. It is something I never dreamt of,” Rohit stated.
India made quite a few changes to the playing XI that took the field in the previous Test against New Zealand. Ravindra Jadeja returns after recovering from his injury, while Hanuma Vihari will finally play a home Test series at No.3.

Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, who was rested for the series against the Kiwis, will also return. They are the only two seamers India opted to go in with and Mohammed Siraj will have to sit out as a result.
India’s playing XI for the first Test:
Rohit Sharma (c), Mayank Agarwal, Hanuma Vihari, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant (wk), Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Jayant Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah.
