The Indian T20I establishment has come under fire following Men in Blue’s disastrous T20 World Cup 2022 campaign, which ended with a 10-wicket loss to England in the quarterfinals. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) became aware of the situation and has begun acting accordingly. While Hardik Pandya is expected to succeed Rohit Sharma as captain, certain new players will be given regular spots in the starting XI.

After the T20 World Cup, India played a T20I series against New Zealand, however, the team was chosen during the competition. As a result, it was impossible to understand the BCCI’s perspective on the future of Indian cricket.

However, some significant changes to the Indian T20I framework are anticipated now that Sri Lanka will visit India for a three-match series and a new selection committee will shortly be constituted. The team chosen will make it clear what the BCCI is considering and which players are on the selection committee’s shortlist for the 2024 T0 World Cup.

Let’s have a look at the 5 Indian players who might be dropped from the India squad for the T20Is against Sri Lanka.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar

The administration of the squad may have difficulties due to the presence of a Bhuvneshwar who is about 33 years old. Will Bhuvneshwar still be alive for the T20 World Cup in 2024 despite a significant slowdown in his pace? Has he got enough time to fix his problems if he can’t hit well enough on decent batting surfaces?

Where does it leave him given that there aren’t many T20Is scheduled for the upcoming season and that he is mostly a single-format player? The majority of his 36 wickets this year have come against weaker competition and in bowler-friendly circumstances. Bhuvneshwar has struggled against stronger batting lineups and on somewhat flatter tracks.

Therefore, it seems like a possible idea that the veteran pacer might be dropped from the team ahead of the T20Is against Sri Lanka.

Harshal Patel

The pacer was a part of the Indian squad for the 2022 T20 World cup as well as the T20I series against New Zealand last month. In the third Twenty20 International between India and New Zealand, which ultimately resulted in a draw with India winning the series 1-0, Harshal was chosen to replace Washington Sundar.

The pacer only claimed one victim, Tim Southee, and he also gave up 28 runs in 3.4 overs. However, he was not selected for the ODI series, which began three days later, on November 25, and he took a trip back to his country.

The course of events for Harshal Patel took a drastic change. Harshal, who often played for India’s playing XI, did not receive a single game in the major competition. In 23 T20I matches, he has taken 26 wickets, however, his economy rate of 9.2 is relatively high. In the forthcoming series, the right-arm pacer might be dropped from the series.

Rishabh Pant’s recent performances in the Asia Cup, T20 World Cup, and New Zealand have drawn criticism from all angles for his dismal form. In fact, Pant hasn’t scored a single half-century since his match-winning century against England at Trent Bridge.

Pant has only scored 987 runs in 56 innings for India, has a very low strike rate of 126.37, and only has three fifty-plus scores to his credit.

In terms of T20 cricket, Pant has been given a tonne of opportunities, and it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to argue that his time in the game’s shortest format may have just run out. This is especially true given that the squad has guys like Kishan and Samson standing by.

Shubman Gill

Gill has the potential to establish himself as a dependable player for the Indian national team. In ODIs, Gill has had an outstanding year, scoring 638 runs in 12 games at an average of 70.88, with one century and four fifty-plus scores. He has been in excellent form, scoring 108 runs at an average of 54 in the three ODIs played in New Zealand.

He still needs to succeed in the game’s shortest format, though. Gill has only participated in one T20I. He hasn’t had a decent enough strike rate to earn a position in the Indian team for the Sri Lanka series where other openers like KL Rahul may get the nod.

Ishan Kishan

After scoring that prestigious double hundred, Ishan Kishan has unquestionably established a case for himself. The wicketkeeper batter may add that flare and can effectively utilize the fielding limits in the opening six overs, but his T20I statistics are less than impressive.

The Jharkhand batsman played two innings in the series against New Zealand, scoring 10 runs off 11 balls and 36 runs off of 31 balls respectively.

With 206 runs at an average of 41.20 and a strike rate of 150.36 in the five-match T20I series against Sri Lanka in June, Kishan led both teams in scoring. Midway through the series, Kishan had risen to the top spot among Indian batters in the ICC T20I rankings, making his first-ever appearance in the top 10. Therefore, it may be harsh for the opener to be dropped from the squad.
