Former cricketer Ajay Jadeja had a strong reaction regarding middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer, saying that Iyer was considered as a future captain 2-3 years ago, but the situation has changed. Jadeja said that many players have dropped out of contention for the captaincy.

Iyer Was Touted To Become The Next Skipper – Ajay Jadeja

Shreyas Iyer has had a great run in 2022 and is India’s top scorer across all three formats, scoring 1609 runs. Ajay Jadeja believes that the BCCI should consider Iyer for the next Indian captain.

“It’s not just once, but Shreyas Iyer has done it twice-thrice in fact. Once he came back from injury, then he was struggling against the short-pitch bowling and he has worked to overcome it. So when you learn to overcome one obstacle, you can put behind the others too. Let’s hope see because 2-3 years ago, he was tipped as the next Indian captain. Now it’s a different scenario altogether with as many as 12 captains in Indian cricket, but he was touted to become the next skipper,” Jadeja said on the Sony Sports Network.

Iyer has surpassed Shikhar Dhawan and Shubman Gill to become India’s leading scorer in ODIs. The right-handed batsman scored 724 runs in 17 matches. Furthermore, he has been in excellent form in Tests, scoring 422 runs from five matches at an average of 60.28, trailing only Rishabh Pant, who has 680 runs from seven games.

Jadeja was impressed with the 28-year-old’s performance against Bangladesh. With India struggling at 74 in the chase for 145, Iyer and Ashwin put on an unbeaten 71-run partnership, taking the team to a 2-0 sweep, with Ash aggressive in this stand.

Speaking about his consistency, Jadeja also said, “He has scored runs consistently. He is averaging 60-70 this year in Test cricket and the temperament he showed on Day 4 was spectacular.”
