West Indies National Cricket Team History:

  • The journey of the West Indies cricket team began in the 1890s when representative sides were selected to play visiting English teams.
  • In 1926, the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) joined the Imperial Cricket Conference.
  • West Indies played their first official international match with Test status in 1928 and became the fourth Test-playing nation.
  • West Indies defeated England for the first time at Lord's on June 29, 1950.
  • The West Indies teams of the 1970s and 1980s are widely regarded as some of the most dominating sides in the history of cricket.
  • As far as the flag of the West Indies cricket team is concerned, the West Indies Cricket Board developed an insignia representing a palm tree and cricket stumps on a maroon background. The anthem for ICC tournaments is "Rally 'Round the West Indies" by David Rudder.
  • Before 1999, the team used a flag featuring a cabbage palm tree and an island, designed in 1923.

West Indies Cricket in ICC Events

The West Indies boast an impressive cricketing resume, clinching the ICC Cricket World Cup twice (1975 and 1979, then known as the Prudential Cup), and the ICC T20 World Cup twice (2012 and 2016, formerly the World Twenty20). They also triumphed in the ICC Champions Trophy once (2004) and secured victory in the ICC Under 19 Cricket World Cup in 2016. Additionally, they've been runners-up in the Cricket World Cup (1983), the Under 19 Cricket World Cup (2004), and the ICC Champions Trophy (2006). Their legacy includes three consecutive World Cup finals appearances (1975, 1979, and 1983) and the distinction of being the first team to claim back-to-back World Cups (1975 and 1979), a feat later surpassed only by Australia
