Sydney Thunder Cricket Team 2024
Sydney Thunder is a Big Bash League (BBL) cricket franchise representing Sydney. They are one of the two BBL teams representing the Australian city.
Along with Sydney Sixers, the Thunder replaced the New South Wales Blues which played in the now-defunct KFC T20 Big Bash. The Sydney-based outfit plays its home games at the Sydney Showground Stadium.
Sydney Thunder's journey in BBL so far:
Sydney Thunder's journey in the Big Bash League did not start in the best of manners. In the inaugural season, they finished at the bottom of the points table. Their fortunes did not change in the following three seasons either.
In the second and third BBL season, the Thunder finished at the bottom of the points table again. In the fourth season, they finished at the seventh spot in the eight-team competition.
In the 2015-16 season which is the fifth BBL season, the Thunder finally went all the way to lift the trophy.
Under the captaincy of former Australia batsman Mike Hussey, Sydney Thunder finished the league stage at the fourth spot. In the semifinal, they defeated Adelaide Strikers before beating Melbourne Stars in the final.
The title win, however, did not kickstart a dominating phase for the team in the BBL. After the title triumph, Sydney Thunder finished at the bottom of the points table in the following season before securing a sixth-place finish in the next two seasons.
They did well in the 2018-19 season and finished the tournament in the third spot. In the next two seasons. the Thunder finished at the fourth spot before finishing at the fifth spot in the 2023-24 season.
