Former Australian captain Michael Clarke predicted that opener David Warner could end being the highest run-scorer of the Ashes if he gets a great start.

Warner is coming fresh from his resilience in Australia’s triumphant campaign in the T20 World Cup. He scored 289 runs at the strike rate of 146.70.

Warner went through a lean patch during the 2019 Ashes, where he scored just 95 runs in 10 Test innings and got dismissed by Stuart Broad seven out of 10 times during that tour.

Clarke, who was a teammate with Warner for a quiet time, said that if Warner gets a good start in the series, he will be unstoppable by the England bowling attack sans Jofra Archer.

Clarke also said if Broad gets the better of Warner in the first couple of Tests, then only he can win the battle. Else he also won’t be able to help England against a fiery Warner.

“I’m telling you: if Davey gets a start in this first Test match, if conditions are good for batting at the Gabba, he will be the leading runs scorer. He will smoke this England attack. No Jofra Archer. He will destroy them in Australian conditions. He’s back confident, played well in the World Cup, has that strut back,” Clarke said on the Big Sports Breakfast.

Warner smashed 335 against Pakistan at the Adelaide Oval in November 2019 and remained unbeaten as then Australia captain Tim Paine had declared the innings.

The first Ashes Test between Australia and England will be played on December 8 at the Gabba in Brisbane.
