England’s Jonny Bairstow and Ben Stokes took the fight to Australia on day 3 of the ongoing fourth Ashes 2021-22 Test being played at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). England has already lost the first three Tests to lose the series and the Ashes urn.
The visitors found themselves in a similar pickle at 36/4 with their savior Joe Root who scored more than 1700 runs in 2021, getting out for a duck in the first Test of the new year 2022. Australia had put a daunting score of 416/8d with Usman Khawaja scoring a brilliant century on his comeback into the Test side after three years and Steve Smith scoring a valiant half-century.
Enter Jonny Bairstow and Ben Stokes, who counterattacked beautifully leaving many wondering why didn’t England batters play like this previously in the series. While Ben Stokes got out for 66 runs in 91 balls with 9 fours and one four; Jonny Bairstow ended the day on 103* with 8 fours and 3 sixes, as England finished on 258/7.

However, despite the action on the field, some spotlight was shifted on the incident which happened when Stokes and Bairstow were heading towards the England dressing room after a hard-fought second session on Day 3. A section of the crowd near the Noble stand placed beside the pavilion started heckling both the batters.
“Stokes, you’re fat. Take your jumper off, Bairstow, lose some weight Bairstow,” a fan said in a video shared by Sydney Morning Herald.
While Stokes chose to ignore the fella, Bairstow said: “Pal, That’s right. Just turn around and walk away. Weak as piss.”

It has been reported that security escorted the unruly fans out of the stadium following the ugly episode. This led to Bairstow, who made a scintillating century off just 138 balls, wishing the abusers were still there when he walked off the SCG in triumph.

“It would be nicer if they were there giving it when we walked off at the end, wouldn’t it? But unfortunately, they weren’t there at the end and they missed the end of a fantastic day’s Test cricket” Bairstow was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo.
SCG is the same venue where Indian pacer Mohammed Siraj was racially abused by a section of the crowd when India played here in early 2021.
