Test Cricket is synonymous with patience, grit, and perseverance. In a format where the ball does a lot of talking, batsmen ought to judge the lines and lengths accurately to succeed. During the late 90s and early 2010s, very rarely you would see batsmen playing in the air and take risks.
However, in the last decade or so, the game has seen a lot of batsmen taking an aggressive approach even in Test Cricket. There are a lot more sixes being hit in the last decade as compared to the early years of Test Cricket. A lot of credit for that should also be given to the introduction of T20 cricket.
The fans, today, witness sixes being hit more frequently in Test Cricket. On that note, here’s a look at which five players have hit the most sixes in Test Cricket since 2018:
5 Batsmen With The Most Sixes In Test Cricket Since 2018
Jos Buttler:
A hard hitter and an aggressive English batsman, Jos Buttler is one of the finest talents in limited over’s cricket. He has been a prolific run-scorer for England in white-ball cricket. However, when it comes to Test Cricket, he hasn’t been able to achieve that consistency. Since 2014, he has represented England in 52 Tests, scoring 2793 at an average of 33.6.
Interestingly, since 2018, Jos Buttler has hit the fifth-most number of sixes in Test Cricket with 22 sixes to his name. In the ongoing Test series against India, Jos Buttler has struggled to come good. In 4 innings, he has managed to score 65 runs. He has hit 10 fours but is yet to hit a six in the series. He would be eying to add a few maximums to his name in the remaining three games in the series.
Mayank Agarwal:
Ahead of the first Test against England, Mayank Agarwal was set to make his debut in Test Cricket. However, an unfortunate blow to his head in a practice session further postponed his ambitions to bring his Test Cricket career back on track.
Mayank Agarwal made his debut in Test Cricket against Australia in 2018 and became a vital cog in India Test Cricket for the next couple of years. He scored some superb knocks during this period, including his maiden Test century against South Africa in October 2019.
In his 14-match Test career, Mayank Agarwal already has two double-centuries to his name. For the unversed, Mayank Agarwal is the third fastest Indian batsman to reach 1000 runs in Test Cricket. Since 2018, Mayank Agarwal has hit 23 sixes in Test Cricket.
Rohit Sharma: 33 sixes
Rohit Sharma has impressed one and all with his comeback in Test Cricket. He was given the opportunity to open the batting ahead of the start of India’s WTC campaign in 2019 and the Indian cricketer grabbed it with both hands. He smashed a plethora of runs against South Africa and the West Indies, scoring 556 runs at an average of 92.66.
He played telling knocks in Australia and also made heads turn in the home Test series against England. He was India’s leading run-getter, scoring 345 runs in 4 matches at an average of 57.50.
Rohit Sharma has had the third-most number of sixes in Test Cricket since 2018. He has 33 sixes to his name and would be eying to add more in the ongoing Test series against England. In his Test Cricket career, Rohit Sharma has so far managed to play 41 Tests, scoring 2831 runs at an average of 46.4.
Rishabh Pant: 34 Sixes
A guy who smashed his first ball of Test cricket to a six, Rishabh Pant’s name in the list shouldn’t come as a surprise. The Indian cricketer has a penchant for scoring huge sixes. No matter what the format is, Rishabh Pant makes sure when the ball is in his arc, he deposits it into the stands.
Interestingly, Rishabh Pant has been more successful in Test Cricket than ODIs or T20Is. Pant made his Test debut during India’s tour of England in 2018. He went on to hit a century in the last Test match, thereby becoming the first Indian wicket-keeper to score a century in England. Interestingly, he hit 6 sixes in 3 Tests during the series-the most by any batsman.
Rishabh Pant has improved by leaps and bounce since. He is currently India’s first-choice wicket-keeper batsman in Test Cricket. Pant has hit 34 sixes in Test cricket since 2018- the second-most by any batsman in the oldest format.
Ben Stokes: 40 sixes
Ben Stokes is one guy who you would love to watch, irrespective of the format. He has been an indispensable asset to the English side over the years. Since 2018, Stokes has grown leaps and bounds in Test Cricket. Since the start of 2019, nobody has hit more centuries than Ben Stokes.
Between 2019 and 2020, Stokes hit 4 centuries at an average of 55.11. He played a pivotal role with the bat for England in Ashes 2019. His heroic century in the final Test of the series helped England draw the series. He finished as England’s leading run-getter in Ashes 2019 with 441 runs in 5 matches at 55.12.
Since 2018, Ben Stokes has smacked 40 sixes in Test Cricket- the most by any batsman. England are dearly missing the services of the all-rounder in the midst of an underwhelming performance against India in the ongoing Test series. The presence of Stokes in England’s team could have made a world of difference to them.
