Cricket is termed as a game of gentlemen. Indian players are often expected to follow some protocols, even when they are off the field. Otherwise, they will get caught in controversies and their careers might also be affected. There are many examples of the same in the past.

However, Indian players are also humans like every human, some are bound to do mistakes in their lives. However, sometimes these mistakes are so big that they are termed ‘crimes’. In this article, we talk about 5 Indian cricketers who were involved in criminal activity.

5. Suresh Raina- Violating Protocols

Suresh Raina was charged with violating Covid protocols in December 2020. The former Indian player was attending a party at Dragonfly club in Mumbai in December 2020, when the Covid protocols were active in the country.

As a result, he was arrested by police with as many as other 34 people in the club. He was booked under IPC sections 188, 269, and 34 (Acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention). Later, Raina was released on bail.

4. Rahul Sharma- Drug Abuse

Former Indian player Rahul Sharma was once booked by the police for consuming drugs. In May 2012, the spin bowler was arrested by police during a raid on a rave party in Mumbai. Many celebrities were also arrested during the raid.

Later, Sharma also tested positive for drugs in his reports. Another South African player Wayne Parnell was also arrested by police during the event. While Sharma did not receive any serious punishment for the same, his IPL career was definitely affected by his act.

3. Amit Mishra- Assault

Former India spinner and Delhi Capitals leg spinner Amit Mishra is another Indian player who was involved in a crime. In 2015, Amit Mishra was charged by a woman for assaulting her in a hotel room. The woman was Amit Mishra’s friend.

Following the complaint, Mishra was charged with violating sections 354 (assault or criminal force to a woman with the aim to violate her modesty) and 328 (causing harm with the intent to commit an offense) of the Indian Penal Code. However, he was released on bail following a three-hour interview with police.

2. Vinod Kambli- Assault

Former Indian player Vinod Kambli was involved in a criminal case in 2015. Kambli and his wife were booked for assaulting their maid. The victim filed a complaint with the police saying that Kambli and her wife assaulted her and confined her in their home for three days.

She also alleged they abused her when she asked for her salary. An FIR was filed by Mumbai Police and the Kambli couple were booked under IPL sections 342, 34, 506, and 504.

1. Navjot Singh Sidhu- Murder

Former Indian player Navjot Singh Sidhu is currently in jail for a crime that he committed in October 1998. During the time, the then-active Indian cricketer beat up a man named Gurnam Singh during a road rage. The victim died while he was taken to the hospital.

Sidhu was charged with murder charges. He was acquitted by the court in 1999. However, the case was bought up again in 2006 and this time, Sidhu was found guilty. The court sentenced him to 3 years jail term. However, Supreme Court granted him bail later. Last year, Sidhu was sent to one year in jail for the crime and is currently facing his punishment.
