Top 10 Highest Run Scorers In T20I Cricket

Having started off his international career as a middle-order batsman, Rohit Sharma transformed into one of the most destructive attacking batsmen in the world when he made the step the order into the opener slot.

The right-handed Mumbaikar, known for his fearsome six-hitting, revels at the top of the order for India, having scored 3,313 runs in 125 matches for the national side at an average of 32.48 and a strike rate of 139.55 and showing no signs of slowing down any time soon.

  1. Martin Guptill (New Zealand, 3,299 runs)

New Zealand opener Martin Guptill is next on the list of the top 10 highest run-scorers in T20I cricket, having scored 3,299 runs in 112 matches at an average of 32.66 and a strike rate of 136.71. The powerful Kiwi has been instrumental in giving his side a number of excellent starts at the top of the order, giving his teammates down the order a platform from which to attack freely.

  1. Virat Kohli (India, 3,296 runs)

Completing the trio of players currently vying for the top spot in the T20I run charts is former Indian skipper Virat Kohli. Equally adept at dominating across all three formats of the game, Kohli has scored 3,296 runs in 97 matches for India at an astonishing average of 51.50 and an impressive strike rate of 137.67. Although he is no stranger to using the long handle, Kohli usually seeks to keep the strike rotating with a healthy mix of ones and twos in between the boundaries instead of simply aiming for the fences with each ball.

  1. Paul Stirling (Ireland, 2,776 runs)

Leading the charge behind the top three on this list is Irish opener Paul Stirling, who has amassed 2,776 runs in 102 matches at an average of 29.84 and a strike rate of 134.69. The burly Stirling likes to go on the attack from the word go, barely getting a sighter before launching into the array of powerful strokes that he can comfortably play all across the park.

  1. Aaron Finch (Australia, 2,686 runs)

Veteran Australian opener Aaron Finch claims fifth place on this list of the top 10 highest run-scorers in T20I cricket, having scored 2,686 runs in just 88 matches at an average of 34.43 and a strike rate of 145.42.

A limited-overs specialist, Finch has the distinction of having scored the highest individual score in a T20I game, having smashed 172 against Zimbabwe in 2018. Were it not for his patchy injury record, there is no doubt Finch would be higher still in this list. In fact, his other T20I century is the third-highest individual score in the game, indicating that he is definitely a man for the big innings.

  1. Babar Azam (Pakistan, 2,620 runs)

Pakistan skipper Babar Azam is one of three Pakistanis currently on this list. The elegant right-hander has scored 2,620 runs in just 73 matches at an average of 45.17 and a strike rate of 129.12. Like Rohit Sharma on this list before him, Azam shone in T20 cricket after promoting himself to the role of an opener, allowing himself to face the maximum number of balls and getting set before piling on the runs. His classic and effortless style of stroke-making is a true sight to behold among the hefty swings that often characterise T20 cricket.

  1. David Warner (Australia, 2,554 runs)

The long-time opening partner of the aforementioned Aaron Finch, Australian David Warner is one of the most effective T20 players around. The punchy southpaw has amassed 2,554 runs in 88 matches at an average of 32.74 and a strike rate of 140.48, often combining with Finch to set Australia off to a flying start. Equally comfortable on both sides of the wicket, Warner is an extremely difficult batsman to get rid of once he gets set.

  1. Mohammad Hafeez (Pakistan, 2,514 runs)

Pakistan veteran Mohammad Hafeez is next up on this list, having scored 2,514 runs in 119 matches for his side. Usually a middle-order batsman, Hafeez is an extremely reliable presence in the Pakistan batting lineup. Not only does he offer solidity to the side, but he is also capable of scoring quickly, using all of his experience to strike the ball to all parts of the ground.

  1. Eoin Morgan (England, 2,458 runs)

England’s limited-overs captain Eoin Morgan finds himself at number nine on this list of the top 10 highest run-scorers in T20I cricket. Morgan has scored 2,458 runs in 115 matches for his side at an average of 28.58 and a strike rate of 136.17. A middle-order batsman, Morgan is excellent at striking from the word go and takes little to no time to get his eye in. Despite his slight frame, he generates great power with his strokes, especially the square of the wicket on the leg side.

  1. Shoaib Malik (Pakistan, 2,435 runs)

In these matches, Malik has scored 2,435 runs at an average of 31.21 and a strike rate of 125.64. Like the aforementioned Mohammed Hafeez, Malik is a middle-order batsman who uses his experience and ability to great effect, manoeuvring the ball to all parts of the ground with great deftness but also pulling out the big shot whenever needed.
