Senior Indian leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal won the ‘ Player of the Match’ award in the first One Day International match of the three-match ODI series between India National Cricket Team and West Indies National Cricket Team at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

India won the toss and opted to bowl first and the Indian bowling unit did an outstanding job. West Indies lost the first seven wickets in 22.5 overs and they managed to score just 79 runs. However, Jason Holder and Fabian Allen had a decent partnership that helped West Indies post 176 runs on the board.

Chasing the target Indian skipper Rohit Sharma and young wicketkeeper-batsman Ishan Kishan were off to a flying start and they had an 84-run partnership.

In the end, middle-order batsman Suryakumar Yadav and debutant Deepak Hooda finished off the match for India and helped the team win by 6 wickets. Also, this was India’s first international victory in the year 2022.

During the post-match presentation ‘Player of the Match’ award winner Yuzvendra Chahal, who picked 4 wickets in 9.5 overs at an economy of 4.98, said that he felt good after picking a 4-wicket haul. He stated:

“Felt good. Washi struck twice in an over so we knew the pressure was on them. My job was to sustain that pressure. Got the feeling watching Washi bowl that the ball was gripping.”

Leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal further said that he had a chat with former Indian captain Virat Kohli and Indian white-ball captain Rohit Sharma and they told him that the pace is important. He added that he looked back at the footage from the three-match ODI series against South Africa to make improvements in his bowling. He said:

Had a chat with Rohit, Virat, they said the pace is important. My thought was that if it’s turning at pace, keep doing it. Threw in a slower one here and there as a variation. I looked back at the footage from the South Africa series to see where I can improve.”
